In July 2026, DuPont launched an end-to-end Direct Lithium Extraction (DLE) portfolio featuring more than 20 products across multiple separation technologies. The new platform is designed to improve lithium recovery, enhance process efficiency, and provide customized solutions for a wide range of lithium brine resources. As global demand for lithium continues to rise due to the rapid growth of electric vehicles (EVs) and energy storage systems, the industry is increasingly adopting DLE as an alternative to traditional hard-rock mining and evaporation-based lithium production.

A key differentiator of the new portfolio is its breadth and flexibility, which allows DuPont to design customized solutions for a wide range of lithium extraction applications. In addition, it offers multiple grades of FilmTec LiNE nanofiltration and reverse osmosis elements. These products provide specialized separation characteristics and incorporate low salt rejection reverse osmosis (LSRRO) technology to achieve ultra-high lithium concentration.

DuPont has also combined several advanced technologies into a single platform, including DuPont IntegraTec, Inge, FilmTec, and DuPont AmberLite. By integrating these technologies, the company aims to improve lithium yield, purity, and concentration throughout the extraction process while also optimizing performance across the entire DLE flowsheet. Beyond this product portfolio, the company is also supporting customers through its global research and development network. The company provides advanced laboratory testing, process modelling, piloting support, and validation using real brine samples. These services help lithium producers evaluate performance, reduce development risks, and accelerate the transition from initial assessment to commercial implementation.

As demand for lithium continues to surge, producers all over the world are looking for more efficient ways to develop new lithium resources. DLE is gaining traction because it offers a more coordinated and potentially faster approach to lithium recovery compared with conventional extraction methods. DuPont’s integrated platform is intended to help producers improve recovery rates, achieve higher product purity, and scale operations more effectively.

Impact on the Chemical Industry

The global chemicals and petrochemicals industry is one of the major sectors that plays an integral component in the global economy and supply chain network. It is one of the world’s major sectors, both in scope, owing to the extensive use of chemicals in everyday items, coupled with the great variety of chemical products accessible, and the revenue it generates from international trade.

  • Changing consumer behavior: The demand for eco-friendly and sustainable products is gaining momentum worldwide, and the market is poised to benefit from this upsurge. It is one of the leading producers of the chemicals required for producing such products
  • Evolving supply chains: Several geopolitical factors affect the global supply chain for chemicals and petrochemical products. Manufacturers are seeking new markets to strengthen their supply chains. Here, India, with its value proposition, can emerge as a trusted partner.
  • Rising domestic consumption: It plays a foundational role in multiple end-user industries, including but not limited to agriculture, pharmaceuticals, automotive, electronics, construction, and more.

Impact on the Lithium Market

The global lithium market size is calculated at USD 11.05 billion in 2025 and is predicted to increase from USD 12.40 billion in 2026 to approximately USD 34.43 billion by 2035, expanding at a CAGR of 12.04% from 2026 to 2035.

According to Precedence Research, lithium has gained significant attention in the renewable energy sector, as it is essential for storing energy generated by solar panels and wind turbines. As the demand for electric vehicles and clean energy solutions continues to rise, the importance of lithium in powering our digital and sustainable future becomes increasingly evident.

The uptake and growth of electric vehicles and energy storage systems evenly redistribute lithium markets, harmonizing the long-term global supply-demand basics. Direct lithium extraction technologies enhance water efficiencies and environmental performance through contemporary lithium mining systems. International economies western economies boost domestic lithium developments, firms' regional supply chains, and strategic resource independence objectives.

Impact on the Direct Lithium Extraction Market

According to Precedence Research, the government and regulatory framework worldwide have been focusing on reducing global carbon emissions, making them major supporters of developing and adopting electronic vehicles, which directly impact the growth of direct lithium extraction technologies. As conventional lithium extraction technologies take months, developing direct lithium extraction technologies was essential to extract lithium within just a few hours or days. The surge of renewable energy and low-carbon emissions is projected to hold future potential for the global direct lithium extraction market.

The strict environmental regulations have set standards for lithium producers to meet the sustainability goal by reducing energy and water consumption and production of greenhouse gas emissions, making more companies invest in developments of direct lithium extraction technologies. The growing government promotions for awareness of clean energy solution utilization and investment in business are drawing way toward the market's success. Access to advanced technologies is allowing the development of efficient and sustainable lithium. The rising production of lithium extraction from a brine source is emerging in the market.

Expert Opinion

“DLE processes are highly sensitive to the lithium brine composition, temperature, and competing ions. By integrating the lithium-selective sorbents, membranes, and ion exchange technologies into a single process design framework, we can optimize the full flowsheet rather than treating them in isolation.”

said Dr. Martin Deetz, Senior R&D Laureate for DuPont Water Solutions. He added that customers are seeking to move from laboratory testing to reliable lithium production as quickly as possible, and that DuPont’s modeling, testing, and piloting capabilities can accelerate the development of tailored extraction flowsheets.
