Shares of video game retailer, GameStop Corp. (NYSE: GME) climbed 2.7% in afternoon trading on Monday, closing at $23.21, as investors positioned themselves ahead of the company’s upcoming second-quarter earnings report, set to be released after markets close on Tuesday.
The stock’s rise highlights a fresh wave of interest from retail traders, many of whom continue to closely monitor GameStop for signs of a sustained rebound. Despite Monday’s uptick, GameStop’s stock remains down 24.3% year-to-date, and it currently trades about 33.7% below its 52-week high of $35.01, reached in May 2025, according to data from IndexBox.
Analyst projections for the quarter vary widely. Revenue is expected to come in somewhere between $823 million and $900 million, while earnings per share (EPS) estimates range from $0.16 to $0.19. These numbers reflect a mix of cautious optimism and uncertainty surrounding GameStop’s evolving business model.
Market participants are particularly keen to hear updates regarding the company’s strategic shift away from traditional brick-and-mortar video game sales toward a more digitally focused business, with added emphasis on blockchain technology and Bitcoin investments. This shift has sparked debate among analysts and investors, as some see it as a necessary evolution while others view it as a high-risk gamble.
GameStop's shares have long been known for sharp price swings, and the last 12 months have seen 34 instances where the stock moved more than 5% in a single trading session, a testament to its continued volatility. One of the most dramatic moves occurred roughly six months ago, when the stock plummeted 24.1% in a single day following the company’s announcement of plans to raise up to $1.3 billion through convertible debt. That capital raise was partly aimed at expanding its Bitcoin holdings, a move that drew skepticism from many in the market due to the inherent risks associated with cryptocurrency investments.
With earnings on the horizon and the company at a critical point in its transformation, investors will be closely watching both the financial results and any guidance or strategic commentary from the management team. Whether GameStop can reignite the enthusiasm seen during previous retail-driven rallies will likely depend on how convincingly it can articulate its long-term vision in a rapidly changing digital landscape.
