Beximco Pharma Unveils Generic Affordable Medicine for Cystic Fibrosis

Beximco Pharmaceuticals has introduced the generic version of an expensive medicine used as a cure for cystic fibrosis, which badly impacts the respiratory system and metabolism of the affected patient. Many patients from all over the world arrived in Bangladesh, which is where Beximco Pharmaceuticals is located, to receive the affordable treatment, which is 96 percent cheaper than the patented medicine.

These patients received treatment at a special program in Dhaka. The global patented medicine goes by the name of Trikafta or Kaftrio, and the medicine by Beximco Pharma goes by the name of Triko. Cystic fibrosis is a genetic disease that people have since birth, and can cause death in childhood, resulting in decreased life expectancy.

Vertex Pharmaceuticals, a company based in the U.S., manufactures the patented version of this medicine, which is priced at USD 370,000 per patient per year. This treatment has produced excellent results but is unaffordable in middle-income and low-income countries. Beximco Pharma has provided a much cheaper alternative, which costs USD 6,375 per year for children and USD 12,750 per year for adults.

Simon Sevcik was in the first batch of patients who received the treatments, who had travelled from Slovakia to Bangladesh with his father. He noted significant improvement in his health soon after he received the treatment. He reported that he started coughing soon after receiving the treatment, which is an indication that his lungs were healing. He felt very relieved, almost ecstatic, as he had longed for this treatment for quite some time but couldn’t afford it.
