New Technology Enables Remote Sample Collection

Covaris, a company focused on sample preparation technologies, has introduced its new truCOLLECT Solution. The system is designed for remote blood collection, stabilization, and processing. It allows users to collect blood through a simple fingerstick at home and send samples to laboratories for further analysis. The device is listed as an FDA Class I product and is aimed at making blood collection more accessible and convenient.

Eliminating Cold Storage Challenges

The truCOLLECT system stabilizes whole blood immediately after collection, allowing samples to be stored and transported at room temperature. This removes the need for cold chain logistics, which are often costly and complex. The solution also addresses common issues linked to traditional blood collection methods, such as variability in samples and the need for clinical visits. By simplifying logistics, the system supports wider use in decentralized and remote studies.

Expanding Access to Research Participation

Experts say the technology can help increase participation in research studies. Elinette Albino noted that the system is especially useful in rural and resource-limited areas, as well as in pediatric research. By enabling easy self-collection, it reduces the burden on participants and allows more diverse populations to take part in genomic studies, including those with limited mobility.

According to Towards Healthcare, the microsampling & minimally invasive blood collection market is projected to experience significant growth, with estimates suggesting the market size will increase from USD 2.71 billion in 2026 to approximately USD 8 billion by 2035, representing a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 12.8% from 2026 to 2035, driven by rising chronic diseases, increasing demand for patient-friendly diagnostics, growing adoption of home-based testing, and advancements in micro-collection technologies globally.

Integrated Workflow for Better Results

The truCOLLECT Solution uses proprietary chemistry to extract DNA directly from collected blood, producing high-quality samples suitable for advanced testing like next-generation sequencing. When combined with Covaris’ truCOVER kits, the system offers a complete workflow from home collection to sequencing readiness. According to CEO Annemarie Watson, the platform simplifies blood-based genomic processes while maintaining data quality and reducing costs.

The company said the system is compatible with automated laboratory processes and delivers consistent DNA results across samples. This innovation is expected to improve efficiency in genomic research and support broader adoption of remote diagnostic solutions worldwide.

A recent report by Towards Healthcare highlights that the microsampling & minimally invasive blood collection market is witnessing growth due to a shift toward remote healthcare, increasing point-of-care testing, technological innovations, and expanding applications in disease monitoring and personalized medicine worldwide.
