HAL and Safran Launch Aravalli Engine Development Through SAFHAL

A formal agreement has been reached between SAFHAL Helicopter Engines Pvt Ltd. And Hindustan Aeronautics Limited and Safran Helicopter Engines to design develop build supply and provide lifecycle support for a new generation high power helicopter engine called Aravalli. The engine is being developed for the Deck based Multi Role Helicopter a naval variant of HAL forthcoming Indian Multi Role Helicopter.

The Aravalli is intended to be a turboshaft engine with 3500-400 shaft horsepower. In Indias efforts to improve domestic aerospace propulsion capabilities and lessen reliance on internationally designed helicopter engines the initiative is a significant step.

The contract was signed by Ajay Kumar Shrivastava Director of Engineering Research & Development at HAL and Oliver Savin Direct of SAFHAL Helicopter Engines and Executive Vice President of Sales and Marketing at Safran Helicopter Engines. The signing ceremony was attended by HAL Chairman and Managing Director K Ravi and Safran Helicopter Engines CEO Cedric Goubet.

The programmed will combine the technical capabilities of HAL and Safran through their SAFHAL joint venture. Development activities will cover advanced design methodologies manufacturing processes, testing product support reliability, maintainability and operational performance in line with international aerospace standards. 

The Aravalli programmed could also create opportunities beyond military applications. The IMRH and its naval version have potential uses in areas such as offshore transportation utility operations and VVIP transport. The programmed is also expected to contribute to the development of Indias domestic Maintenance Repair and Overhaul capabilities.
