IBM Expands AI and Quantum Research with IIT Bombay and IISc
On October 1, 2026, IBM announced the expansion of two long-standing research collaborations in India with the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Bombay and the Indian Institute of Science (IISc). With a purpose to foster innovation in the domains of sovereign AI, agentic AI, quantum computing, and next generation computing systems, the collaboration with IIT Bombay has been started in 2018 that will allow researchers to work on the key aspects including adaptation of sovereign models and Indic languages, multimodal AI, architecture of AI, knowledge retrieval, and application of AI in Software. The collaboration with IISc that began in 2021 will help in researching agentic software systems, applications of AI, energy-centric AI models, and development of quantum algorithms. The research with IIT Bombay will also work on enhancement of multilingual AI technology aimed specifically at Indian languages through the application of effective optimization methods. They also intend to work on multimodal AI that focuses on software programming education, human and AI collaboration, and intelligent functioning. In addition to that, the two organizations will take steps toward development of intelligent solutions and AI processes.
The aim of the IBM-IISc partnership deals with agentic AI workflows in order to have an effective orchestration in hybrid cloud environments. The research plan also includes an establishment of lightweight time-series foundation models of IBM Granite model family for energy purposes (forecasting, anomaly detection, load disaggregation, energy optimization). The quantum computing part will focus on quantum/high-performance computing orchestration as well as novel quantum-HPC algorithms working for speeding up scientific discovery.
The broadening of collaboration shows that the companies place an increasing importance on interconnection of academic research with business-oriented AI and advanced computing applications. By integrating IBM experience in the area of AI, hybrid cloud, quantum computing with research expertise of IISc and IIT Bombay the collaboration projects aim at developing interdisciplinary researches, preparing scientific specialists and implementing the latest technologies.
Effects on the Artificial Intelligence Industry
This partnership promotes the advancement of enterprise-focused AI capabilities in fields like agentic workflows, multimodal systems, knowledge retrieval, sovereign AI, and AI infrastructure. Concentrating on Indic language models can also foster the development of localized AI systems with the ability to fulfill multilingual requirements. Research into distributed inference, AI runtimes, and lightweight foundation models may also allow for the faster and scalable deployment of AI capability in both business and scientific domains.
The project also points to the growing significance of collaboration between academia and industry in the field of real-world AI technologies. Research in AI-enhanced software engineering, energy analytics, smart operations, and hybrid cloud orchestration will help open doors to new AI applications and foster the development of specialized skillsets and research capabilities in India.
Impact on the Quantum Computing Market
This collaboration at IISc broadens the scope of IBM's quantum research in quantum-HPC orchestration and algorithm development. Adapted workflows that apply quantum as well as classical computing resources will be examined in unison to improve scientific computing and expedite applications requiring advanced computational abilities.
The integration of quantum computing with high-performance computing and AI certainly mirrors industry's general move towards hybrid computational architectures instead of isolated quantum systems. Collaboration of such kind in academia can support the efforts of algorithm development, training of workforces, benchmarking, and research commercialization and enhance the burgeoning quantum technology ecosystem.
Therefore, the collaboration, which was extended with IIT Bombay and IISc, further fortifies India's stance as a significant research domain for AI, hybrid computing, and quantum technologies. As the partnerships enter their next stage, continued research in agentic AI, sovereign AI, multimodal systems, quantum-HPC workflows, and smart infrastructure is likely to offer the support needed for emerging definitions and applications to strengthen computing capabilities with proven relevance to industries.
