Mercedes-Benz has officially unveiled the all-new GLC EV, the first fully electric iteration of its globally popular mid-size SUV, during the IAA Mobility Show in Munich. The reveal marks a milestone for the automaker, with its accelerated electrification strategy, introducing one of the most popular models to the zero-emissions environment. Built on sustainable design, luxury, and performance, the GLC EV is positioned as a new standard in the highly competitive segment of the premium electric SUV.
Its new model will come in two trims, including GLC400 4MATIC and GLC300+, with the customer having an option between two-motor all-wheel-drive performance and a more efficiency-oriented one with a single motor. The combination of high-tech engineering with a radical reinvention of the interior and exterior is positioning the GLC EV as not only another electric SUV, but as a flagship that reflects the vision of sustainable luxury mobility as seen by the brand.
GLC400 4MATIC has two electric motors with a maximum horsepower of 483 that enable the SUV to be accelerated up to 100 km/h in only 4.4 seconds. This places it in a head-to-head competition with the Tesla Model Y Performance and the Porsche Macan EV. Customers seeking a balance of performance and efficiency may consider the GLC300+, which features a single rear motor delivering 369 horsepower and a 0 to 100km/h sprint time of 5.9 seconds. A sophisticated two-speed transmission backs both, a hard-to-find provision in the EV market, which gives them good low-speed torque delivery with the added benefit of keeping their efficiency high at higher cruising speeds.
The GLC EV will be introduced with the GLC400 4MATIC in late 2026 and GLC300 + in early 2027. Although the prices are not announced yet, industry observers think that the SUV will directly compete with luxury electric vehicle models, including the BMW iX3, Audi Q6 e-tron, and Tesla Model Y Performance. The GLC EV should have a strong appeal to high-end consumers as the vehicle has long range, luxury attributes, and brand loyalty, which means they seek both utility and status in their EVs. Furthermore, the GLC EV will fortify the EV portfolio of the automaker and also act as a litmus test of its capacity to blend brand heritage with the requirements of an ever-changing automotive landscape.
