Movistar Expands Electronic Waste Recycling Efforts in Mexico for a Greener Future
Movistar Promotes Greener Tech Recycling
In February 2026, Telefonica Movistar Mexico is increasing its efforts to deal with the growing problem of electronic waste in Mexico by expanding its recycling initiative known as Planeta Movistar in the current period. The company has recycled 17000t electronic waste from 2011 to 2025. Also, the goal of the program is to make it easier for people to dispose of their old electronic devices in a responsible way instead of throwing them away with normal garbage. Moreover, as technology changes quickly, many people are expected to replace their phones, chargers, and other gadgets frequently, which leads to a large amount of electronic waste.
Convenient Drop-Off Points for Old Devices
Movistar has created more collection points where customers can drop off unused or broken electronic devices to address this issue. Also, these include items such as mobile phones, cables, chargers, and accessories that are no longer needed. Once collected, the devices are sent to specialized recycling facilities where they are carefully processed. During this process, useful materials like metals, plastics, and electronic components are separated and recovered.
The company has been working on electronic waste recycling in Mexico for more than a decade. Also, the program has managed to collect thousands of tons of electronic waste in recent years. This shows that many consumers are becoming more aware of the environmental impact of discarded electronics and are willing to participate in recycling efforts when convenient options are available.
According to Towards Chem&Materials, the electronic waste recycling market size accounted for USD 52.85 billion in 2025 and is predicted to increase from USD 100.61 billion in 2026 to USD 100.61 billion by 2035, expanding at a CAGR of 6.65% from 2026 to 2035 as demand grows for sustainability and recycling. Europe dominated the electronic waste recycling market with the largest revenue share of 37.00% in 2025.
Advancing Sustainable Solutions for Electronic Waste in the Current Period
Another important part of the initiative is that the company is not only focusing on consumer electronics in the current period. Furthermore, Movistar is also working to recycle equipment from its own telecommunications infrastructure. Items such as network components, batteries, and other technical equipment that are no longer in use are also processed so that their materials can be reused.Electronic waste is becoming one of the fastest-growing waste streams worldwide, and Mexico is no exception, as per recent observations. Also, by expanding its recycling network and promoting awareness about e-waste, Movistar is trying to build a more sustainable system for managing discarded technology in the country.
