Novant Health has registered for state approval to approve 225 inpatient hospital beds as part of a novel patient tower that evolved to strengthen access to high-acuity care in southeastern North Carolina, under the state’s certificate of need process.

Laurie Whalin, president of Novant Health’s Coastal Region, commented that they are the only health system that can enable perfect integration of care. They have the infrastructure, consisting of operating rooms & catheterization labs, which are unavailable for growth under the ongoing state plans.

Upon approval, Novant Health will rapidly introduce innovative hospital beds online by confirming that those beds are placed to care for the most difficult, highest-acuity patients in the region. Moreover, this new tower will encompass centralized inpatient and surgical heart & vascular care, like modern operating rooms, cardiac catheterization labs, & electrophysiology labs. This will enable care teams to handle the full spectrum of cases, from routine procedures to severely ill patients, within a single, highly specialized circumstance.

According to Towards Healthcare, the U.S. patient positioning and support aids market is projected to experience significant growth, with estimates suggesting the market size will increase from USD 1.43 billion in 2026 to approximately USD 2.61 billion by 2035, representing a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 6.9% from 2026 to 2035. A booming geriatric population & surged life expectancy, resulting in increased cases of orthopedic, cardiovascular, & neurological surgeries, fueling the need for highly precise & stable positioning. An eventual trend is fostering the unification of robotic-assisted surgery & advanced imaging, demanding specialized, sensor-integrated, & motorized positioning devices.
