Households accounted for approximately 631 million tonnes, or 60% of total food waste, thus making homes the largest source among households, food service, and retail.

Food waste also represents wasted land, energy, water, packaging, transportation, and labor. FAO estimates that food loss and waste led to approximately 8–10% of global greenhouse gas emissions.

The good news is that many of the most effective solutions do not demand expensive technology or major lifestyle changes. Small changes in how households shop, store, cook, and then consume food can prevent substantial amounts of waste.

1. Plan Meals Before Going Grocery Shopping

One of the simplest ways to decrease food waste is to decide what will actually be eaten before buying groceries. Impulse purchases, duplicate purchases, and buying ingredients without a specific meal in mind, can quickly result in food being forgotten in refrigerators and cupboards.
