Amazon hints at what will be its next avenue and an innovative launch by its engineers. Amazon is expected to offer AI code-generation tools from third-party companies rather than its own, a significant move to expand its previously launched proprietary Kiro service, as per an internal memo reviewed by sources.

The memo is posted to Amazon’s internal news site, where the company mentioned, “While we continue to support existing tools in use today, we do not plan to support additional third-party, AI development tools. As part of our builder community, you all play a critical role in shaping these products, and we use your feedback to aggressively improve them."

This guidance seems to preclude Amazon employees from using other well-known software tools, such as OpenAI’s Codex, Claude code by Anthropic, and Cursor. Amazon has already invested nearly $8 billion in Anthropic and is expected to reach a 7-year, $38 billion deal with OpenAI to sell its cloud-computing services. Amazon is on the cusp of gaining a reputation, but it trails competitors in developing AI tools, as rivals like Google and OpenAI remain at the forefront.

Kiro is an AI code-generation tool built by Amazon that uses techniques to generate websites and applications from simple English text. It largely depends on the coding tools used by anthropologists, not just by Claude Code.

As per the memo signed by Peter DeSantis, a senior vice president of AWS utility computing, and Dave Treadwell, who is a senior vice president of the E-commerce foundation, they said, “To make these experiences truly exceptional, we need your help. We’re making Kiro our recommended AI-native development tool for Amazon.”

This internal guidance is based on Kiro's global availability for the audience, along with some innovative features. However, spokespeople from Anthropic and Cursor haven't yet immediately responded to a request for comment, but an Amazon spokesperson confirmed the memo.

Cursor, Codex, and Claude code are popular ways for engineers to spin up new offerings and services quickly. Cursor was valued at approximately $30 billion after completion of the initial funding round this month.
