Apotex declared that SEVMIATM has been approved by Health Canada, making it the country's first generic semaglutide licensed for long-term weight control. When paired with a lower-calorie diet and more exercise, the medication is recommended for adults with obesity or overweight problems. SEVMIATM, which was related in partnership with Orbicular Pharmaceutical Technologies, strengthens Apotex's line of generic medications while increasing access to reasonably priced GLP-1 treatments. It is anticipated that the approval will increase patient access to efficient weight management medicines and encourage more widespread use of affordable substitutes for branded treatments.

According to Precedence Research, the generic drugs market size was valued at USD 468.08 billion in 2025 and is projected to reach USD 762.48 billion by 2034, expanding at a CAGR of 5% during the forecast period. The market is driven by the growing need for reasonably priced medications for the expiration of branded medications' patents, favorable regulatory approvals, and expanding initiatives to lower healthcare costs. Sustained market expansion is also being aided by the growing popularity of high-quality generic medications.

Industry Impact and Market Outlook

The SEVMIATM approval demonstrates the increasing contribution of generic pharmaceutical producers to increasing access to cutting-edge treatments. It is anticipated that generic drug manufacturers will provide more affordable substitutes that increase market competitiveness and affordability as more sophisticated biologics and GLP-1 medications become less exclusive. In addition to helping healthcare systems by lowering treatment costs and expanding patient access, this trend is probably going to hasten the adoption of generic medications.
