Fraunhofer UMSICHT at the Forefront in Developing High-Performance PLA Composite Material for the Electrical Industry

Fraunhofer UMSICHT is leading the development of high-performance PLA composite material, which can meet the stringent requirements of the electrical industry. This development is under way through the HighTechPLA project, where several industrial partners have contributed.

This project is aimed at developing an alternative to fossil-based engineering plastics, which can be derived from renewable resources. However, PLA, which is derived from renewable resources, does not possess the required performance characteristics. Fraunhofer UMSICHT is modifying the PLA material, to enhance its technical parameters. In order to enhance the characteristics of PLA, the research team is focusing on modifying the crystallization of PLA, which can improve the thermal stability of the material. Special additives and components are being incorporated into the PLA material, which can enhance the flame retardancy and electrical insulation properties.

A major goal of this project is to ensure compatibility with existing processes of manufacturing. The newly created compound is expected to be processed using conventional injection molding machines. The electrical industry in Germany consumes large quantities of high-performance plastic materials annually. A renewable alternative to this can help to minimize the use of petroleum-based materials and consequently decrease greenhouse gas emissions in the country.

This project will also help to achieve the objective of a neutral environment set at the European level as well as at the national level in Germany. Fraunhofer UMSICHT and its partners are studying structure and property relationships to optimize performance characteristics of the compound. They are working to develop a commercially viable PLA-based compound that can be used in the electrical industry at the high-end.
