Greenwave Circularity raises $31.5 million for plastic recycling expansion
In September 2026, Recycling and sustainable packaging company Greenwave Circularity raised $31.5 million from OeEB, the Development Bank of Austria, with aims to expand its plastic recycling capacity in India. This new investment will help the company develop new recycling infrastructure and meet the growing demand for recycled packaging materials from fast-moving consumer goods (FMCG) companies.
The European Union’s European Fund for Sustainable Development Plus (EFSD+) backs the long-term financing. Greenwave is set to use the funding to establish new greenfield plastic recycling capacity in India. The planned facility will process post-consumer plastic waste, initially focusing on discarded PET bottles. Greenwave will convert the recovered material into food-grade recycled PET (rPET) resin and preforms, which will then be used to manufacture new packaging. In addition, the company also plans to expand its recycling capabilities to other widely used plastics, including high-density polyethylene (HDPE) and polypropylene (PP).
The facility is expected to use European recycling technologies to process post-consumer plastic waste and produce high-quality recycled materials for packaging applications. By deploying advanced recycling technology, Greenwave aims to increase the availability of recycled plastics while supporting the growing shift towards more sustainable packaging solutions.
Impact on the Chemical Market
Alongside new recycling infrastructure, Greenwave has also planned to strengthen its connections across the country’s fragmented scrap-collection ecosystem. The company will also establish structured links with waste collectors and scrap suppliers in order to improve the movement of recyclable plastic into formal processing networks. Consequently, the initiative will help increase collection efficiency and improve overall plastic recycling rates. The financing will therefore support both recycling capacity and the supply-chain infrastructure required to secure a consistent supply of post-consumer plastic feedstock.
Greenwave’s expansion comes as FMCG companies increase their use of recycled materials in packaging and seek reliable domestic supplies of rPET. By expanding local recycling capacity and strengthening collection networks, the company aims to improve access to recycled plastic while supporting India’s transition towards a more circular packaging economy. This investment marks another step towards building a stronger domestic recycling ecosystem that can convert post-consumer plastic waste into valuable raw materials for new packaging applications.
Impact on the Green Packaging Market
The global green packaging market size is valued at USD 351.27 billion in 2025 and is anticipated to reach around USD 612.64 billion by 2035, expanding at a CAGR of 5.72% from 2026 to 2035.
According to Precedence Research, the market is growing because it is an efficient and cost-effective alternative to single-use packaging. The green packaging market is driven by rising demand for sustainable packaging solutions and stringent environmental regulations reducing plastic waste. There is a growing demand for sustainable consumer products, and this trend will drive the popularity of eco-friendly packaging solutions, as online commerce grows. Industries are creating such categories as plant-based film, biodegradable trays, paper bottles, and recyclable flexible packaging to respond to changing consumer demand.
Strict green legislation and the rising demand for green products are the key factors driving the green packaging market. Governments are developing policies to address plastic waste, promote recycling, and generally move towards biodegradable and compostable packages. This change is encouraging manufacturers to find a more environmentally friendly substitute for traditional plastics that is recyclable, compostable, and renewable. The corporate trend to become more sustainably minded, the increasing number of circular economy projects, and the demand for low-carbon packaging solutions are driving market growth.
