Iraq Introduces A Major Petrochemical Plant And A New Basra Industrial City With Chinese Partnership

Iraq, in partnership with China, launched a major petrochemical initiative and a new industrial city in Basra, featuring the country's largest chlorine and caustic soda production facility. The modern plant will daily produce 120 tons of caustic soda, 106 tons of liquid chlorine, 185 tons of hydrochloric acid, and 150 tons of sodium hypochlorite, serving key industrial sectors and creating jobs.

Key Project Details

According to Al-Najm, these initiatives align with the ministry’s vision for integrated industrial cities designed to diversify the economy, stimulate local production, and generate high-quality employment opportunities. Furthermore, these projects serve as an invitation for additional private and international investment. Representing a significant milestone in China-Iraq cooperation under the "Belt and Road" Initiative, the Green Industrial City project entails a projected total investment exceeding $2 billion. This initiative is designed to integrate China’s sophisticated industrial technologies and sustainable manufacturing principles while leveraging intelligent management systems to optimize operational efficiency.

According to Towards Chem&Materials, the sodium hypochlorite market size accounted for USD 18.85 billion in 2025 and is predicted to increase from USD 19.78 billion in 2026 to approximately USD 30.56 billion by 2035, expanding at a CAGR of 4.35% from 2026 to 2035 as demand for water treatment and disinfection is increasing globally.

Product Innovation Accelerates the Sodium Hypochlorite Market

  • Market players are increasingly developing more stable and less corrosive formulations of sodium hypochlorite to address transportation and handling challenges, leading to market growth soon.
  • Surged in awareness of hygiene and sanitation, especially in public spaces and hospitals, has sustained high demand for disinfecting agents and sanitizers.
  • Rising urban populations in developing economies need improved wastewater treatment facilities, boosting market growth further.
  • Stringent government mandates on water, sanitation, and quality in both emerging and developed nations are forcing industries to adopt effective sanitation solutions.
