Two joint Air-to-Ground Missiles have been successfully launched from a surveyor class unmanned surface vessel by Lockheed Martin and California based Saildrone. The live fire test which took place during the US Navy Rim of the Pacific Exercise represented a major advancement in the fusing of modern military capabilities with autonomous marine platforms.

The unmanned vessel acquired targeting information about a simulated high speed surface target from an Adjunct Remote Engagement System during the experiment as part of the demonstration, the Surveyor platform then took independent action based on the data. The USS Theodore Roosevelt Carrier Strike Ground and the US Navy collaborated in the exercise.

The demonstration is particularly notable because Lockheed Martin and Siildrone moved the concept from development to a live fire demonstration in just over six months according to the Defense Post this highlights the ability of defense companies to integrate established technologies with commercially developed unmanned platforms.

The development reflects a broader shift in modern defense toward distributed and autonomous systems unmanned surface vessels can potentially provide persistent maritime awareness and support missions without requiring personnel to remain aboard the platform. The integration of mission systems and autonomous technologies could therefore expand the range of roles that USVs can perform for naval forces.

Impact on Aerospace & Defence Industry

The Lockheed Martin Saildrone demonstration, which shows how commercially built unmanned platforms may be linked with proven military technologies, might have a big influence on the aerospace and defence industries. This strategy might lessen the requirement to create every platform from the ground up while giving defense companies more alternatives for creating distributed marine capabilities.

The demonstration also demonstrates the increasing need for improved sensors communications mission management software autonomous systems and remote engagement technologies technology supplier and defence contractors may concentrate more on modular designs that enable the integration of various payloads and mission systems onto unmanned platforms.

The integration of missile capable mission systems with unmanned maritime platforms could strengthen the defense industry's shift toward distributed and autonomous capabilities it may also create new opportunities for companies developing sensors communication systems autonomy software navigation technologies mission computers and modular defense payloads.

Impact on Unmanned Surface Vehicle Market

As naval forces investigate autonomous systems for a broader range of operations, the advancement may help sustain the market's expansion for unmanned surface vehicles. The effective integration of JAGM missiles shows that the USV may be able to advance data collection and surveillance to more complex operational duties.

Defense companies may be inspired by the demonstration to take USV into account for distributed maritime operations. In which autonomous vessels coexist with traditional crewed ships. Autonomous navigation remote command and control systems with modular payloads sensors, communications technology and marine cybersecurity solutions may become more in demand as a result.

The broader adoption of USV could also create opportunities for manufacturers that can provide flexible platforms capable of supporting different payloads. Such modularity may become increasingly important as navies seek to adapt unmanned vessels for surveillance electronic warfare anti-submarine warfare communications logistics and other missions.

The demonstration could accelerate the transition of unmanned surface vessels from surveillance focused platforms toward more multi mission defense systems. As navies seek scalable and autonomous maritime capabilities, demand could increase uses that can support surveillance reconnaissance communications and other mission requirements.

Impact on Military Drones Market

The global military drones market size accounted for USD 16.89 billion in 2025 and is projected to hit around USD 18.23 billion by 2026 and is anticipated to reach around USD 35.96 billion by 2035, growing at a CAGR of 7.85% from 2026 to 2035.

The demonstration by Lockeed Martin and Saildrone also illustrates the wider use of unmanned technologies in contemporary military operations. The Surveyors' development shows how autonomous technologies are increasingly being adapted for combat and mission support duties across many operational situations even though it is a marine drone rather than an aerial aircraft.

Unmanned systems that can carry out surveillance reconnaissance targeting communication and other task while lowering crew exposure are being investigated by military groups increasingly. More coordinated operations between crewed and uncrewed assets may also be supported by the integration of autonomous platforms with current command and control networks.

Greater interoperability across airborne surface submarine and other unmanned platforms may be encouraged by the increasing use of autonomous software secure communications sensor fusion artificial intelligence and networked command systems may become more in demand as a result.

The demand for common autonomy software secure communications sensor fusion and networked command systems may increase due to the growing use of autonomous platforms across air and maritime domains this cross domain approach may assist defense manufacturers in creating more adaptable and interoperable unmanned systems for future military operations.
