Mauritius Introduces Online Licensing and Road Tax System for Taxi Operators

In August 2026, Mauritius introduced the Motor Vehicle License (MVL) System, which facilitates online license renewal and road tax payment. This initiative aligns with the government’s goal to increase the adoption of digital workflows in the public sector. The MVL system was launched in Port Louis, where the Minister of Land Transport, Mahomed Osman Cassam Mahomed, and the Minister of Information Technology, Communication and Innovation, Dr Avinash Ramtohul, were also present.

The launch of this system was also accompanied by the introduction of the Taxi Operators Welfare Fund (TOWF), which provides awareness to the taxi operators regarding the fund and its programs. The MVA system is intended to decrease the number of trips that the taxi operators have to make to Post Offices and National Land Transport Authority (NLTA) offices for licensing and payment workflows.

This system will also generate a database of taxi operators to assist the government in digitizing its public workflows. Minister Mahomed emphasized the value of taxi operators for Mauritius transport sector, especially during emergencies. TOWF does the important job of enhancing the welfare of taxi operators. It offers medical assistance, death grants, hardship support, and educational grants to taxi operators and their families.

The transport ministry has partnered with the Ministry of Information Technology, Communication and Innovation for many other digitization efforts, which include online tax declaration payments, the penalty-point system, digital driving licenses, and a fleet management system.
