Medtronic launches Simplera Sync Sensor in Korea to Simplify Diabetes Management

Medtronic has launched its latest continuous glucose monitoring (CGM) tool, the Simplera Sync Sensor, in Korea, increasing sensor options for consumers of its MiniMed 780G automated insulin delivery (AID) system and supporting patients with diabetes to manage their glucose levels more simply.

The Simplera Sync Sensor rationalizes insertion in two steps and is about half the size of Medtronic's previous-generation sensor.

The novel all-in-one disposable sensor integrates separate components into a single tool, simplifying replacement. It also prevents the requirement for routine fingerstick calibration and additional adhesive tape.

In a study of patients with type 1 diabetes who switched from the Guardian 4 Sensor to the Simplera Sync Sensor, participants reported that the novel sensor was simple to insert, thinner, and more convenient to manage.

"For patients with type 1 diabetes who require around-the-clock glucose monitoring and insulin delivery, the complexity of sensor replacement can significantly affect long-term treatment adherence," said Dr. Kim Jae-hyun, academic director of the Korean Society of Pediatric Endocrinology and professor of pediatrics at Seoul National University Bundang Hospital. "Devices such as the Simplera Sync Sensor, which simplify the user experience, can provide a stronger foundation for more consistent glucose management and better adherence."

The MiniMed 780G technology automatically adjusts and delivers both basal and correction insulin each five minutes based on glucose readings from the CGM sensor. Equipped with Medtronic's SmartGuard automatic mode, the technology continuously responds to changing glucose levels during the day and night, reducing the need for physical insulin adjustments.

Clinical and real-world evidence shows that, when applied with optimal surroundings, the MiniMed 780G system supports consumers in achieving glucose control above the American Diabetes Association (ADA) and international guideline recommendation of 70 % Time in Range (TIR), with many consumers reaching 80 % TIR. In separate real-world research involving 8,019 U.S. MiniMed 780G users aged seven years and older, nighttime TIR reached 91 %.

The MiniMed 780G technology received approval from the Ministry of Food and Drug Safety in April 2023 for people aged seven years and older with Type 1 diabetes. It remains the only insulin pump with automated insulin delivery capability presently available in the Korean market.

Existing MiniMed 780G consumer begin applying the Simplera Sync Sensor directly via a software update through the MiniMed Mobile app, enabling them to advantages from the novel sensor without replacing their present pump.
