According to the sources, to develop a superintelligence team and offer tough competition to emerging AI enterprises, META is going to make a huge investment of USD 14.3 billion in the Artificial Intelligence firm Scale. It is further recruiting Alexandr Wang, who is CEO of the Scale, soon joining a team of meta looking to develop superintelligence at the tech giant.
META announced it is a strategic partnership and investment with Scale. The Scale revealed that such a huge investment by Meta in the Scale has expanded its current market value by up to USD 29 billion. However, Scale remained an independent AI firm, but this agreement will substantially escalate Scale and Meta’s commercial bonding, in which Meta will hold a 49% stake in Scale’s annual profit. While working on the Mea project, Wang will remain on a Board of Directors at the Scale too.
Mark Zuckerberg is focusing on the abstract idea of “superintelligence”, which other companies, like Open AI and Google, have termed artificial general intelligence, or AGI. Such a strategic partnership between young, enthusiastic leaders running AI-based startups and tech giants is not a recent thing. In fact, the same strategies were applied by many firms to acquire supremacy in the evolution of AI. Microsoft has hired key staff from the Inflection AI firm along with its CEO and co-founder, Mustafa Suleyman, who is now running Microsoft's AI department. Google, for instance, has hired leaders of a leading chatbot company named Character AI.
Wang is going to offer human labor required to improve the AI system and look for workers to draw boxes around pedestrians or other objects in a street photo, which will be helpful in predicting what's in front of self-driving cars. General Motors and Toyota were one of the customers of Scale firm. Moreover, Meta chose to launch its flagship LIama system as an open source that encourages people to use it and modify its key elements if required. However, it is still lagging behind as compared to the usage of LLM.
Scale's founder, Wang, has also sought to establish a friendly relationship with the U.S. government by achieving military contracts to offer AI tools to the Pentagon and presenting for Donald Trump's inauguration. Meta has also begun to offer AI services to the U.S. government, showcasing their assertion in the market.
