The creator of ChatGPT, Sam Altman, is planning a significant move in the Indian market by establishing an AI data center with 1 GW capacity, which will be the country’s largest AI data center. The facility is anticipated to have a capacity of at least 1 gigawatt and is a project that showcases a huge scale. At the same time, leading tech giants like Reliance, Google, and Microsoft have already established digital infrastructure.

According to the sources, OpenAI is in the initial stage of talks with potential project partners who can participate in its agenda to expand OpenAI’s presence in the Indian market. Although the timeline of this project is not yet clear, CEO Sam Altman, who plans to visit India this month, may be able to share more details and shed light on their upcoming project for an AI data center in India. Many leaders are interested in investing in the Indian market, as it has become a frontier marketplace in terms of users and future opportunities, offering investors a chance to generate profits. By expanding its local team, OpenAI is set to have a new office in New Delhi, India. It has previously launched its USD 5 monthly plan to leverage ChatGPT, making it highly affordable for everyone in India. This move by ChatGPT also aligns with the Indian government's AI mission, worth $1.2 billion, which aims to establish homegrown large language models to strengthen India's AI capabilities.

A data center in India, if built, would not only facilitate AI services for Indian users but also minimize concerns about confidential data being transferred overseas, which is a threat to the nation’s security, as per protocol. It would also provide faster and precisely customized services regarding AI and build trustworthy relations among regulators and policymakers. On a global platform, especially in the U.S., OpenAI has struck a deal with Softbank and Oracle to develop facilities that could eventually rival the world’s largest computing hubs, underscoring its ambition to establish a strong global presence in the AI domain and gain mastery and authority in providing AI services worldwide.
