The Postgraduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGIMER) in Chandigarh received the Platinum Rating for green healthcare facilities by the Indian Green Building Council (IGBC) in a historic move by the Indian government in terms of the overall healthcare system. It received the award under the project under the name of PGI Extension of Nehru Hospital, and the second project that received the highest sustainability rating by IGBC was PGIMER, which was the first government hospital in India to receive the status.

Driving Sustainable and Climate-Smart Healthcare

PGIMER Chandigarh uses buildings that are climate-wise, energy-saving systems, and ecologically friendly materials. In addition to the green infrastructure, PGIMER has been at the forefront in the context of offering inclusive healthcare financing, cancer research, and simplified patient-care systems.

During a recent visit, Prof. Vipin Kaushal, Medical Superintendent of PGIMER Chandigarh, welcomed the delegation and highlighted the institute’s ongoing modernization initiatives, advanced clinical services, and patient-care systems designed to strengthen public healthcare delivery

Dr. Naveen Pandey from the Hospital Administration Department also shared insights on the performance and impact of the Ayushman Bharat Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (AB-PMJAY), noting that since 2019, PGIMER has treated a significant number of beneficiaries under the scheme, cementing its position as one of India’s leading public tertiary care centers.

According to Precedence Research, the Green Hospitals Market size was calculated at USD 74.50 billion in 2025 and is predicted to increase from USD 82.10 billion in 2026 to approximately USD 196.78 billion by 2035, expanding at a CAGR 10.20% from 2026 to 2035, driven by rising demand for sustainable and eco-friendly healthcare infrastructure.

Market Growth and Industry Impact

According to Ananya Soch, the industry growth is facilitated by the growing need for sustainable healthcare infrastructure and least invasive surgeries. The need to incorporate energy-efficient models, waste management initiatives, and other materials that are more eco-friendly is becoming a concern that hospitals and other healthcare facilities have to put on the list of priorities in an effort to limit the effects on the environment. The shift is backed up by the technological modifications and policies that ensure environmental accountability in medical practice.

Outlook for Green Healthcare in India

The government and the non-governmental medical institutions in India should emulate the image of the PGIMER Chandigarh, as it will improve sustainability in the country. The green hospital market will grow tremendously as more hospitals are going green with renewable energy, construction that is climate-sensitive, and green business models. PGIMER platinum certification is an indicator of a disruptive program in the future-oriented, sustainable Indian healthcare.
