Chinese automotive giant SAIC has officially unveiled the Roewe M7 plug-in hybrid (PHEV), marking a major milestone for the brand. The first production vehicle was designed under the guidance of Josef Kaban, the former design chief of Rolls-Royce. Not only does the M7 introduce a new tier of design excellence to the Roewe portfolio, but its impressive range and efficiency levels set remarkable standards, reinforcing SAIC's aspirations in the ever-evolving plug-in hybrid market.
The Roewe M7 is equipped with SAIC's fifth-generation DMH hybrid system, which combines a 1.5-liter gasoline engine with a powerful front-mounted electric motor and a 19.7 kWh lithium-iron-phosphate battery. Taken together, this configuration gives the vehicle an exceptional CLTC-rated total range of 1,274 miles, including 99 miles of pure electric driving, putting this PHEV squarely at the top of the segment. This makes the M7 an attractive choice for customers who want long-distance capabilities while still having an option for electric-only use.
Unlike many hybrids that sacrifice either efficiency or performance, the Roewe M7 strikes a balance that is just right. The engine generates 110 horsepower and 100 lb-ft of torque, and has a high thermal efficiency of 43 percent. Additionally, the electric motor provides an extra 184 horsepower and 243 lb-ft of torque, which gives the vehicle responsive acceleration and smooth power delivery.
Beyond performance and design, the Roewe M7 is a strategic statement by SAIC in the global hybrid and EV markets, with governments around the world tightening emissions regulations and consumers calling for greener mobility solutions. The M7 is a forward-looking product that straddles the line between sustainability and practicality. Furthermore, the Roewe brand gains prestige as the platform for Kaban's design vision, and through this, the brand gains prominence in both domestic and foreign markets.
The introduction of the M7 is also about extending its brand presence at a time when competition in the hybrid and EV segments is ramping up. With its innovative hybrid technology, luxurious design cues, and intelligent cockpit features, the Roewe M7 aims to cater to a new generation of customers who desire the convenience of hybrid systems while embracing the progress of electric vehicles. This move is part of SAIC's overall vision to establish itself not only as the dominant automaker in China but also as a serious competitor on the global stage.
