In September 2026, SiC Systems announced a collaboration with CarbonLume Inc. to advance next-generation plant designs to convert methane into clean hydrogen and tunable carbon nanotubes (CNTs) in a single reaction step. This agreement will deliver faster, more cost-effective plant designs and open the door to commercial-scale deployment.

How will Multi-Agent AI Take on Methane Conversion

First-of-a-kind industrial plants face engineering hurdles, not just chemistry. SiC aims to address these challenges by organizing specialized agents into adaptive hives that optimize the engineering workflow. CarbonLume’s innovative photocatalytic reactor, which offers two marketable products, signifies a new step in this strategy.

This agreement strengthens SiC's process-manufacturing efforts in the energy transition and advanced materials by targeting industrial sectors like steel, cement, and ammonia that are looking for lower-carbon pathways to hydrogen and high-value carbon materials. The CarbonLume deployment serves as a model for how AI-driven engineering automation can lower costs and timelines for new process plants.

SiC's multi-agent platform primarily offers:

  • Flowsheet synthesis by combining CarbonLume’s catalyst and reactor information directly into flowsheet and layout optimization.
  • Accelerated pre-engineering and basic engineering by organizing agents into cooperative groups to run simulations and analyses simultaneously, reducing engineering hours.
  • Process intensification via exhaustive design exploration, where the platform evaluates design variables in parallel to optimize methane conversion and energy consumption.
  • Digital twins for real-time control by developing real-time digital models of reactors for predictive control and troubleshooting.

The collaboration also aims to shorten the time to first production for CarbonLume plants, generating earlier revenue and improving project economics by reducing engineering prices. The partners expect to achieve CAPEX through unit economics by producing clean hydrogen and carbon nanotubes, using CarbonLume's efficient process.

Expert opinion

According to Christopher Savoie, PhD, JD, Co-Founder, Chairman, and CEO of SiC Systems, CarbonLume is the ideal partner for SiC, tackling a significant decarbonization challenge at scale. This multi-agent platform addresses engineering hurdles in plant development with real-time, physics-informed agents, enabling faster, safer plant operations based on CarbonLume's innovative methane conversion technology.
Dr. Abdelaziz Gouda, Founder and CEO of CarbonLume, also emphasized that, by saving engineering hours from concept to execution, the technology’s potential. CarbonLume’s reactor converts waste methane into clean hydrogen and battery-grade carbon nanotubes in one step by deploying plants much faster and benefiting organizations.

Why It Matters

As decarbonization accelerates, low-carbon hydrogen and carbon nanomaterials are becoming essential for clean energy and storage solutions, as well as advanced materials in various industries. CarbonLume's efficient process leverages waste methane to produce both, while SiC's platform can reduce costs and time in developing first-of-a-kind plants, thereby providing a faster pathway to operational success.
