SK pharmteco Marks Construction Progress with Ribbon Cutting for Two Advanced Manufacturing Facilities at Swords, Ireland Campus
Significant expansion in small-molecule API commercial capacity and a new kilo-scale GMP facility intended for HPAPIs and ADC payloads.
SK pharmteco recently hosted a formal ribbon-cutting ceremony to mark the official creation of two major service expansions at its production campus in Swords, Ireland. The event marks a significant development in increasing the site's capability to deliver both large-scale commercial small molecules and ultra-high-potency active pharmaceutical ingredients (HPAPIs).
Distinguished guests, involving The Mayor of Fingal, Councillor Tony Murphy, and Counselor Sung-min Ko, Deputy Head of Mission at the Embassy of the Republic of Korea, joined the organization and site leaders and team members at the ceremony.
"Today marks an inspiring milestone for SK pharmteco and a testament to the remarkable dedication of our team here in Swords," said Joerg Ahlgrimm, Chief Executive Officer of SK pharmteco. "While we look forward to welcoming new and existing customers to these facilities in the coming months, today is about recognizing the vision, excellence, and hard work that brought these facilities from blueprint to reality."
Facility Highlights & Technical Capabilities
Multi-Purpose GMP Small-Molecule API Facility:
Capacity Expansion: Adds approximately 26.5 m3 of reactor capacity, involving three 8,000 L glass-lined batch reactors with related holding capacity and a 4.15 m2 Hastelloy agitated filter dryer.
Operational Integration: Built directly into existing infrastructure to add manufacturing capacity in an established production environment. The facility also helps with both future containment and capacity expansion.
Kilo-Scale GMP HPAPI & ADC Payload Facility:
High-Potency Containment: Intended for ultra-high potency compounds with occupational exposure limits (OELs) as low as 10 ng/m3.
Technical Specs: Helps batch sizes up to 0.5 - 1.5 kg and involves glass reactor capacity up to 30 L, rigid and flexible isolators, high-pressure chromatography, tray drying, and lyophilization.
Seamless Development Flow: Located alongside the site's present ultra-high potent lab and production services, the kilo-scale facility offers greater continuity as potent programs transition from healthcare development into full GMP manufacturing.
“These two facilities will expand our capacity to safely handle HPAPIs and scale critical therapies from clinical development through global commercial supply,” said Declan Hannigan, Site Head & General Manager, Small Molecule Europe. “Inside these walls, our team manufactures hope. Somewhere around the world, a patient is receiving a life-changing treatment made possible by the precision and passion of our workforce.”
The Swords campus has a proud legacy spanning more than six decades of healthcare manufacturing excellence. By increasing both bulk commercial infrastructure and high-containment kilo-scale suites on the same site, SK pharmteco provides pharmaceutical and biotech collaboration with a complete, agile continuum for complex small molecules and specific therapies.
According to Towards Healthcare, the high potency active pharmaceutical ingredients market is projected to grow significantly, with estimates indicating the market size will increase from USD 234.33 billion in 2026 to approximately USD 418.64 billion by 2035, expanding at a CAGR ofâ¯6.66% from 2026 to 2035. High drug potency provides benefits like lower dosing needs, improved effectiveness, fewer adverse effects, cost-effectiveness, and increased flexibility in dosing and administration. With smaller doses, patients can achieve suitable results and lower side effects. It allows for precise targeting and expense savings. Moreover, careful monitoring and adherence to dosage instructions are important to confirm safe and efficient application of high-potency medications. These highly targeted molecules, often used in oncology, autoimmune diseases, and hormonal therapies, offer extraordinary therapeutic power in microgram-level doses. But that same strength makes HPAPIs difficult to manufacture.

A recent report by Towards Healthcare highlights that the high potency active pharmaceutical ingredients market is growing, as HPAPIs play a significant role in cancer treatments, specifically in chemotherapy and immunotherapy. These ingredients target particular pathways in cancer cell proliferation, leading to more efficient treatments with fewer adverse effects. The benefits of HPAPIs involve improved effectiveness, which allows lower dosing frequency and reduces toxicity. This benefit is specifically vital in oncology, where traditional management often has significant side effects. The complexity of HPAPI production in oncology drug manufacturing cannot be overstated. These potent compounds need specialized facilities equipped with advanced containment technology to confirm safety during handling. Given the potential risks related to these compounds, HPAPI production includes stringent protocols to avoid contamination and protect workers.
