SpaceX Launches Space Robot to Extend the Life of Satellites

In July 2026, a space robot with 2 arms was launched by SpaceX from a private launch facility in Cape Canaveral, Florida, U.S. This robot will put jet packs on the satellites that have been in operation for a significant duration and are running low on fuel. These jet packs will provide the required thrust and thus increase the life of those satellites, which would otherwise need to be replaced soon as they run out of fuel.

This mission robotic vehicle (MRV) has been developed by Northrop Grumman, and its jet packs will synchronize with the speed of Earth’s rotation and maintain an altitude of 36,000 kilometers next year. This is the altitude where a big chunk of geostationary satellites have their orbit trajectory around the Earth. The MRVs are expected to be in their designated trajectories by mid-2027, where their 10-meter-long arms would put a jetpack on a satellite that is running low on fuel.

To power the first flight of the MRV, it was provided with 3 electricity-powered jetpacks, which got detached after liftoff. The jetpacks are also equipped with xenon thrusters just like the MRV, to provide them with thrust to attain their intended orbits. When the jetpacks are in their designated trajectories, the MRV holds them and attaches onto the satellites as per the requirements of the mission.

These jet packs are approximately the size of a washing machine and, when attached to a satellite running out of fuel, provide the necessary thrust to help them stay in operation for significantly longer than just retiring immediately after the fuel runs out. This innovation has the potential to provide massive financial benefits to various satellite operators such as SES of Luxembourg and Optus of Australia.

According to Precedence Research, the launch of the MRV and the jetpacks is expected to provide a boost to the information communication technology industry as it provides satellite operators a way to keep their satellites in their designated orbits even after they run out of fuel. This provides the companies a financial cushion, allowing them to invest more in research and development of advanced technologies related to satellites. It will also facilitate companies to keep more satellites in operation, which will result in better surveillance and data collection for that respective mission.

The global satellite market size was estimated at USD 362.28 billion in 2025 and is predicted to increase from USD 391.99 billion in 2026 to approximately USD 780.24 billion by 2035, expanding at a CAGR of 7.97% from 2026 to 2035.

According to Precedence Research, the satellite market is expected to benefit from the launch of the MRV and jetpacks, as it provides a novel technology to extend the lifespan of the satellites. This development is expected to propel further research and development projects as various satellite operators invest in such projects, acknowledging the financial benefit it can provide over the long-term. This also facilitates satellite operators to improve the software and hardware technology on their satellites as they have more resources to invest, as they have to pump less money into manufacturing new satellites due to the extended lifespan of the existing ones.

According to Precedence Research, the development of the MRV and jet packs is expected to shift trends in the satellite manufacturing market. This is because the sheer demand for manufacturing new satellites would slow down, but there would be an increased demand for hardware components and software required to communicate with the MRV and attach the jet packs securely to its body.
