A popular satellite internet provider owned by Elon Musk, Starlink, has obtained final regulatory approval from the Indian government to launch its internet services in India. Currently, Starlink is operating in more than 100 nations and regions across the world. It can even work in remote areas where a direct view of the sky is possible.

Starlink India Launch

Starlink received permission in the form of a license from the Indian National Space Promotion and Authorization Center, which allows Starlink to commercially operate in India for the next five years and is valid until July 7, 2030. After Reliance Jio and Eutelsat’s OneWeb, Starlink is the third company to be granted permission by the Indian government to bring satellite internet to India.

Starlink utilizes a series of satellite constellations to communicate with each other and provide uninterrupted internet services back to Earth, unlike optical fiber-based broadband providers like Airtel, Ida, and Vodafone, which makes it stand out among conventional internet service providers. A few months prior, the network operator responsible for Starlink installation and activation, Reliance Jio, announced its initiative to collaborate with Starlink. This tie-up aims to sell its equipment in India through physical retail stores. Moreover, Bharati Airtel also made a collaboration with Starlink, which will bring internet satellites to India.

In terms of costs, the kit offered by Starlink will be between INR 900 and INR per month. As per speculation, it will be a promotional monthly subscription plan. However, Starlink’s internet speed entirely depends on the geographical location of the receiver infrastructure. In May, Starlink launched its satellite services in the neighboring countries of India and Bangladesh. The one-time setup cost for Starlink services in Bangladesh is nearly 39,000, and monthly subscription plans are offered starting from INR 2,990.

However, it's essential to note that Starlink isn't the only company that is going to launch satellite internet services. BSNL, a renowned telecom service in India, shared its future endeavor to build a new connectivity service called Direct to Device. The project is in the pipeline and will be released soon, and is claimed to transform satellite and terrestrial mobile networks to offer uninterrupted and reliable internet connectivity.
