Toyota, in collaboration with UK academic institutions and tech startups, is leading a major new initiative aimed at accelerating electric vehicle (EV) innovation, supporting highly skilled engineering roles, and enhancing the UK’s global standing in sustainable automotive technologies.
Commenting on the initiative, UK Industry Minister Chris McDonald emphasized the strategic value of public-private collaboration in the green mobility space:
“This initiative demonstrates how our strong partnership with industry can drive innovation and help position the UK as a competitive hub for electric vehicle manufacturing. Our top priority is economic growth, and by backing our advanced automotive sector, our Industrial Strategy is attracting greater investment, creating jobs, and delivering opportunities across the country.”
Joint Investment to Advance Zero-Emission Technologies
The project is supported by a £15 million government grant, with matching private sector funding, and is focused on developing and evaluating the next wave of zero-emission transport solutions.
Funding is provided through the Advanced Propulsion Centre UK (APC) as part of its Collaborative Research and Development programme, which is designed to stimulate additional investment and further develop the UK’s clean tech manufacturing landscape.
This initiative is also aligned with the UK government’s Plan for Change, reinforcing its pledge to deliver sustainable transportation while fostering high-value engineering employment.
Toyota and UK-Based Partners Driving Electric Micro-Mobility Innovation
At the core of this collaborative effort is Toyota, working alongside key partners such as the University of Derby and Elm Mobility Limited. Together, they will integrate academic research with startup innovation to develop electric micro-mobility vehicles—compact, low-emission transport options optimized for urban use.
The project aims not only to develop advanced EV prototypes but also to upskill the workforce, contributing to job creation and talent development in the UK’s advanced manufacturing sector.

Supporting the UK's Zero-Emission Targets
This initiative is part of a broader national push to bolster the UK’s zero-emission vehicle (ZEV) supply chain. It builds upon the recently launched DRIVE35 programme, a £2.5 billion investment plan running through 2035, supporting projects from battery manufacturing (gigafactories) to innovative vehicle designs.
Rik Adams, Innovation Delivery Director at APC, praised the collaboration
“We’re proud to support Toyota on this urban EV mobility project, which embodies the core objectives of DRIVE35, fostering innovation, strengthening the UK’s automotive competitiveness, and accelerating the transition to zero-emission transport. It’s great to see Toyota working alongside UK SMEs like Elm and leading academic institutions like the University of Derby to design and test this concept here in the UK.”
Driving Toward a Greener Tomorrow
This government-industry-academic partnership highlights the UK’s commitment to leading the transition toward cleaner mobility. It represents more than just a technical advancement it’s a forward-looking investment in sustainable transport, clean air, and a resilient green economy for future generations.
