An artificial intelligence company led by popular figure Elon Musk, xAI, is ready to sign the safety and security chapter set by the European Union code of practice. It is a non-binding framework, majorly developed to help and guide AI companies in alignment with the EU’s AI regulations that will be introduced in the upcoming period.
This code of practice is developed by 13 independent experts. It consists of three major sections, including transparency, copyright, and safety & security. The safety chapter is mainly developed for developers with highly advanced systems. On the other hand, all AI providers with a general purpose are expected to follow the rules and guidelines set by the EU’s authority for transparency and copyright. Therefore, by accepting and signing the safety & security chapter, greater legal clarity has been reinforced by xAI in alignment with the evolving regulatory landscape of the European Union. Despite this, the company has taken a strong stance regarding other parts of this code.
The company clarified its stand by posting it on the social media platform X, formerly Twitter, “xAI supports AI safety and will be signing the EU AI Act’s Code of Practice Chapter on Safety and Security. While the AI Act and the Code have a portion that promotes AI safety, its other parts contain requirements that are profoundly detrimental to innovation, and its copyright provisions are an overreach.”
XAI hasn't yet responded to whether they are going to sign another part of the code, which is related to rules for copyright and transparency. Neither did they confirm requests for approval of other guidelines, nor avoided replying to them outside of standard business hours. This stand has created speculation and uncertainty over safety rules and their compliance, which the EU sets. However, xAI is expected to strictly follow previously designed rules that they have agreed to work upon, which further increases their business in the European region.
On the other hand, several tech giants have taken a different stand on these rules or codes. According to the sources, Google is set to sign the whole plan with a complete framework, while Microsoft is also likely to follow the same code of conduct. However, Meta showed hesitation to follow these rules and chose not to follow them, saying they are vague and unclear and extend beyond necessary safety rules.
