Europe Nutraceuticals Market Expands as Pure Ocean Algae Launches Red Seaweed Supplements
In April 2026, a marine biotechnology firm based in West Cork announced the launch of what it purports to be Irelands inaugural health supplement range derived from native red seaweed, targeting the wellness, beauty, and womens health sectors.
Pure Ocean Algae, located on the Beara Peninsula, reported that its new nutraceutical range has entered the market in Ireland and the United Kingdom, with plans for expansion into the European Union and Asian markets later in 2026. This new product line comprises three capsule-form offerings: a supplement designed for hair and nails, a cognitive-support product focused on improving concentration and memory, and a formula to balance hormone levels.
Pure Ocean Algae Evolving the Nutraceutical Market with Red Seaweed
Founded in 2019 by Michael ONeill, an engineer and former commercial fisherman who redirected his career towards sustainable aquaculture, Pure Ocean Algae has concentrated on cultivating Palmaria palmata, a red seaweed species native to Ireland, commonly referred to as dulse or dillisk. The company claims to have developed Irelands first comprehensive production platform for this species, encompassing hatchery operations, sea-growing sites, and processing facilities. This integrated model is said to support consistent quality and traceability, which are essential for nutraceutical applications.
Mr. ONeill stated, “The red seaweed we cultivate is vastly different from wild-harvested dulse. By controlling every phase of its development, we can enhance its bioactive properties and ensure a clean, consistent ingredient suitable for wellness applications. This is the foundation of our new product range.”
Market Outlook and Industry Impact
The Europe nutraceuticals market size was calculated at USD 104.77 billion in 2025 and is expected to increase from USD 111.78 billion in 2026 to approximately USD 204.38 billion by 2035, expanding at a CAGR of 6.91% from 2026 to 2035. The growth of the market is driven by rising health awareness, an aging population, and growing demand for preventative healthcare solutions.
Over the past two years, Pure Ocean Algae has also invested in research and development, such as human trials with researchers at the University of Limerick to study the functional benefits of dulse extracts. It said early studies related to metabolic and digestive health helped support its expansion into the broader functional foods and nutraceuticals market.
