Zimbabwe Introduces Tilapia Marketing Strategy To Support Aquaculture Expansion

Zimbabwe introduced its first-ever farmed tilapia marketing strategy to boost national income and food supplies. Developed through localized research in Harare and Manicaland, the plan serves as a roadmap for scaling the country's aquaculture sector through strategic partnerships.

Infrastructure Investment

According to the FAO, this strategy provides a framework to boost tilapia production, establish structured markets, and increase value-added products while reducing import dependency. The FAO’s new strategy focuses on boosting Zimbabwe’s fish profile by improving access to quality feed and fingerlings, upgrading cold chain systems, and refining farming techniques. Key goals include strengthening quality assurance, enhancing traceability, and promoting locally processed, branded tilapia products.

According to Towards Chem&Materials, the aquaculture market size accounted for USD 322.85 billion in 2025 and is predicted to increase from USD 344.97 billion in 2026 to approximately USD 626.25 billion by 2035, expanding at a CAGR of 6.85% from 2026 to 2035 as demand for sustainable protein sources is increasing across the globe.

Rising Demand for Seafood and Protein Accelerates the Aquaculture Market

  • As the global population increases, there is a need for protein-rich diets. Aquaculture acts as a sustainable alternative to fulfil this demand, particularly as wild fish stocks decline.
  • Advancements in technology are facilitating the growth of aquaculture into offshore environments, increasing manufacturing capacity.
  • Consumer demand for sustainable products is fueling the adoption of certifications like the Aquaculture Stewardship Council (ASC).
The introduction of new species to farming practises offers diversity for farmers and helps tackle risks related to rearing a single species.
