BASF Introduces Tinosorb S in the U.S. After Receiving FDA Approval
In August 2026, BASF unveiled Bemotrizinol (BEMT) to be sold under its trademark Tinosorb S in the U.S. after the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) gave approval for the use of Bemotrizinol as a sunscreen active ingredient. The company announced that it has been authorized to sell Bemotrizinol in the U.S. under a Supplemental License Agreement with DSM Nutritional Products LLC. This agreement gives BASF co-exclusive rights to advertise and sell Tinosorb S during the 18-month exclusivity period of the FDA. The authorization includes sunscreen products that are manufactured in the country as well as those imported into the U.S.
Tinosorb S is a broad-spectrum sunscreen that protects the skin from UVA as well as UVB radiation. Bemotrizinol has excellent photostability, which facilitates sunscreen formulations to consistently shield the skin from sunlight. It can also enhance the photostability of other UV filters, which would aid the development of reliable sunscreen formulations. BASF already provides various UV protection formulations via its Tinosorb, Uvinul, and Z-COTE product ranges. Its offerings also include formulation ingredients such as emollients, emulsifiers, rheology modifiers, film formers, and active ingredients.
BASF has integrated UV filters and formulation technologies to support sunscreen producers as well as formulators throughout the entire course of product development. Such comprehensive technology assists customers in developing products that have broad-spectrum protection, great aroma, reliability, and compliance with sustainability regulations.

Impact on the Chemicals Industry
According to Precedence Research, the launch of Tinosorb S in the U.S. is expected to positively impact the chemicals industry. This is due to the fact that it marks its entry into the U.S., which is an important market where people have good buying power. There is an increased awareness among people regarding the harmful effects of exposure to excessive sunlight on the skin. This will lead to its widespread adoption in the U.S., as it provides protection against UVA as well as UVB radiation. It has excellent photostability, due to which it can provide protection to the skin for extended periods of time.
Impact on the Skin Care Products Market
The global skin care products market size is projected at USD 161.45 billion in 2025 and is predicted to increase from USD 168.54 billion in 2026 to approximately USD 236.99 billion by 2035, expanding at a CAGR of 4.36% from 2025 to 2035
According to Precedence Research, the introduction of Tinosorb S is expected to benefit the skin care products market. This is owing to the fact that it combines a UV filter as well as formulation technology in this product. It is expected to be widely adopted as it is a broad-spectrum sunscreen and has good stability on the skin. This helps people with sensitive skin to use it, as it spreads evenly and does not clog pores, which can happen due to uneven distribution.
The part of the skin surface where too much sunscreen collects can result in clogged pores and eventually acne. This is why consistency is important in formulations applied to the skin. In today’s era, there is a lot of pollution and a stressful lifestyle, which has increased the prevalence of acne and made people more conscious about the formulations that they apply to their skin.
Impact on the Specialty Chemicals Market
The global specialty chemicals market size is valued at USD 940.72 billion in 2025 and is predicted to increase from USD 978.79 billion in 2026 to approximately USD 1,377.32 billion by 2035, expanding at a CAGR of 3.54% from 2026 to 2035.
According to Precedence Research, the launch of Tinosorb S is expected to positively impact the specialty chemicals market due to the fact that the development of such high-quality broad-spectrum sunscreens requires the use of high-performance chemicals. The manufacturers need accurate calibration during production to control the proportion of various raw materials. The growing adoption of such advanced sunscreens is expected to boost the demand for specialty chemicals.
