BYD is once again making headlines in the electric vehicle world as it prepares to unveil a hypercar variant of its Yangwang U9, the company’s flagship electric supercar. BYD is beating the headlines in the electric vehicle market once again since it is ready to launch a hypercar variant of its Yangwang U9, the flagship electric supercar of the company. China regulatory filings suggest the next model will have an insane 2,978 horsepower (2,200 kW) with a quad 555 kW motor powertrain, making it probably the most powerful electric production vehicle yet made. This is also a massive jump over the initial 960 kW output of the U9, which was already capable of achieving a top speed of 375 km/h, way beyond its claimed 309 km/h max speed when it was first introduced.

Electric Hypercar

Unveiled as the new product of BYD under the luxury performance sub-brand Yangwang last year. The U9 rapidly took its place as a key contender in the high-performance EV industry in the international market. Its quad-motor configuration and the advanced battery technology of the automobile already have blistering acceleration that enables the car to reach speeds of 0-100 km/h in only 2.36 seconds. The hypercar version of the idea is not only seeing BYD trying to leapfrog rival electric hypercars, such as the Rimac Nevera and the Lotus Evija, which clock approximately 1,500 kW, but it serves to reimagine what an electric performance car can be.

The launch of this new Yangwang U9 hypercar becomes a defining moment, as not only BYD but the entire world electric vehicle market will be represented by it. It shows how Chinese manufacturers are becoming the most innovative ones in high-performance electric vehicles and rival the European and American supercar manufacturers. Additionally, supposing the production car meets the initial expectations, the U9 would represent a new standard in electric hypercars with its otherworldly power harnessed by the most advanced motor technology and the ability to not only charge blisteringly fast but also perform in track times with no fuss and no jail time.
