The corrPRESS iB17, a digital inkjet press especially designed for corrugated packaging manufacturing, has been released by Canon. This move bridges the gap between digital customization and analog corrugated printing, marking Canon's official entry into high-volume industrial printing for corrugated board.
The corrPRESS iB17 is designed to handle thickness ranging from 1mm to 8mm and can operate with boards up to 1m wide. With a rated speed of up to 8000 m per hour, it is among the fastest digital corrugated systems that are currently being considered. According to Canon, the machine could produce 15 million m of throughput annually, highlighting its goal of operating on an industrial scale.
Utilizing water-based inks in conjunction with a priming layer to maximize print quality on corrugated substrates is a significant technical highlight. Using a post-print methodology. Instead of creating a board, it allows converters to incorporate digital finishing into their current workflow by printing on prefabricated corrugated board.
This launch is a part of Canon's larger initiatives to enter the digital packaging and labeling markets. The corrPRESS iB17 signals Canon's intention to become a significant supplier in the packaging value chain, not just in general digital print, by enhancing its well-established label printing lines.
Peter Wolff, Chief Marketing Officer and Senior Vice-President at Canon Production Printing, remarked, “The launch of the Canon corrPRESS iB17 marks a significant milestone in our journey to becoming a key player in the packaging industry. It demonstrates our strong commitment to supporting corrugated converters through today’s challenges.
"By combining our proven proprietary inkjet technology with an industrial board transport system, we’ve created an innovative press that delivers offset-quality prints, outstanding productivity, and digital flexibility, specifically designed for indirect food contact applications. With seamless integration into existing production environments, the highly automated corrPRESS iB17 expands the economic benefits of digital printing, extending its advantages far beyond traditional short-run applications."
In summary, Canon corrPRESS iB17 represents a bold step into digital corrugated production. With high throughput, broad substrate support, and environmental ink choices, it aims to offer converters a route toward scalable, flexible, and high-quality digital packaging.
