FUJIFILM Sonosite Rolls Out AI Ultrasound Tool to Optimize Peripheral IV Insertion Planning
FUJIFILM Sonosite has launched PIV Assist, an innovative artificial intelligence (AI) capability that helps clinicians plan and execute peripheral intravenous (PIV) access more quickly and safely. The most common procedure performed in hospitals and clinics worldwide is peripheral IV placement, but it is the most difficult intervention in patients with difficult venous access. Furthermore, it is believed that this new tool makes clinical practice easier, reduces the time required to perform procedures, and enhances patient comfort and outcomes.

Piv assist is based on a solid artificial intelligence model. It is trained on tens of thousands of ultrasound scan cases to provide reliable, consistent, and accurate vessel detection in diverse patient anatomies and clinical conditions. The system provides real-time vascular guidance, helping clinicians properly locate veins and arteries before the procedure. It measures the catheter-to-vein ratio (CVR) and the depth of the vein center, providing clinicians with the necessary information to plan access points.
PIV Assist also enhances safety and decision-making by highlighting arteries in red and veins in blue based on the optimal available catheter gauge, enabling an evidence-based choice of catheter size. This aspect is especially useful when dealing with patients who have difficult vascular access, including elderly, obese, or very sick patients. Additionally, PIV Assist is a step toward more widely integrating AI into ultrasound-guided procedures, laying the foundation for further developments in diagnostic imaging, vascular interventions, and training programs.
Executive Statement
Richard Fabian, President and CEO, FUJIFILM Sonosite, Inc.
"Peripheral IV procedures are among the most common performed on patients, and growing evidence supports ultrasound-guided insertion as a helpful technique, especially for those with difficult IV access. At Sonosite, we have a long history of innovation in both education and product development. PIV Assist is an AI-powered tool we developed in close collaboration with our customers. It’s designed to reduce cognitive load and enhance clinician confidence during vascular access planning, both of which are critical to delivering effective patient care."
