In June 2026, the Union Minister for New and Renewable Energy and Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution, Shri Pralhad Joshi, inaugurated the Green Hydrogen Certification Portal of India during the National Workshop on “Strengthening the National Green Hydrogen Mission: Through State Policies, Hubs & Infrastructure,” organized by the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy. Developed by the MNRE, the portal aims to facilitate transparent certification and regulatory compliance under the Green Hydrogen Certification Scheme of India.

Indian Government Boosts the Production of Green Hydrogen

In his address on the theme “Strengthening the National Green Hydrogen Mission: Through State Policies, Hubs & Infrastructure,” Shri Joshi urged states to actively engage in advancing the National Green Hydrogen Mission. He noted that six states have already implemented dedicated Green Hydrogen Policies, while seven others have incorporated hydrogen into their existing industrial and renewable energy policy frameworks. Furthermore, four additional states are in the process of finalizing their policies.

Emphasizing efforts to enhance domestic manufacturing capabilities, he stated that financial incentives have been granted to 15 companies to establish an indigenous electrolyzer manufacturing capacity of 3,000 MW per annum, thereby reducing reliance on imported supply chains.

In the refinery sector, Shri Joshi observed that contracts have been awarded for the supply of 30,000 MTPA of green hydrogen to IOCL, BPCL, HPCL, and NRL. He also highlighted that ₹84 crore has been sanctioned for pilot projects aimed at testing 100% hydrogen injection in the steel sector. The Mission aspires to establish 5 MMT of green hydrogen production capacity, supported by 125 GW of dedicated renewable energy, catalyzing investments exceeding ₹8 lakh crore, creating over 600,000 jobs, and reducing annual carbon emissions by 50 million tonnes.

Market Outlook and Government Funding

According to precedence research, the global green hydrogen market size is calculated at USD 12.31 billion in 2025 and is expected to increase from USD 17.28 billion in 2026 to approximately USD 231.32 billion by 2035, expanding at a CAGR of 34.09% from 2026 to 2035. This growth is driven by global government initiatives to reduce carbon emissions and advancements in green hydrogen production technology.

Additionally, The Union Minister announced that the Green Hydrogen Mission has allocated ₹100 crore to support startups focused on green hydrogen technologies. He mentioned that the first list of nine startups is currently undergoing approval, with a total funding allocation of ₹22 crore.
