Hexagon has partnered with the Fraunhofer Institute to develop advanced simulation software for battery design that aims to transform the research and development processes associated with next-generation battery technologies. This software suite is under Hexagon's HxGN Digital Materials suite that combines the cutting-edge electrochemical simulation with multi-physics material modeling. This tool allows users to create a digital twin of a battery cell, enabling virtual exploration of various design parameters, including internal morphology, particle size, and distribution.

Some of the features included in the Battery Design Suite are electrochemical simulation, material and microstructure modeling, integration of 3D metrology, and optimization of charging protocols. With this software, a user can assess the performance of various battery chemistries, examine how materials affect energy efficiency, lifespan, and safety, reverse-engineer the microstructure of manufactured cells using CT scans, and optimize charging protocols with respect to better battery management system (BMS) performance.

Simulation Software

Hexagon and Fraunhofer ITWM have teamed up to develop tools that can be used by R&D teams to develop better performing battery cells faster and get rapid feedback from prototypes. Creation of a digital twin delivers real-time insight into how design changes affect performance at the level of fine-tuning configurations without testing. Further, it significantly reduces the development cycle and cost by minimizing testing needed on prototypes that may fail.

This new simulation software suite will revolutionize battery innovation by speeding research and development, boosting performance, and eliminating waste. Today, the growing demand for efficient and sustainable battery technologies will find a further important driver in the collaboration between Hexagon and Fraunhofer. The software suite further enables manufacturers through multi-physics modelling completed with electrochemical simulation for the advancing demands of electric vehicles and other forms of renewable energy storage and portable electronics.
