Himachal Pradesh, India State Government Introduces Health Insurance Up to USD 10,500

In August 2026, Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu, the Chief Minister of Himachal Pradesh, led a state health department meeting that included discussions about the new insurance policy. The state government is planning to provide health insurance up to USD 10,500 for families that fall under the economically weak status. This insurance will charge a reasonable premium and help enhance access to quality healthcare for poor people.

This insurance policy will benefit nearly 1 million families across the state. The Chief Minister said that multi-specialty and tertiary care hospitals have to provide high-quality treatment to such patients and that no compromise is allowed due to financial constraints. He said that this policy is designed to enhance access to quality healthcare among all people. This policy has the goal that no person should be deprived of quality treatment due to economic constraints.

Sukhu emphasized the government’s initiatives to enhance hospitals and medical education facilities, along with modernizing diagnostics workflows by incorporating automation technologies. These initiatives are intended to facilitate efficient diagnostic services to ensure a good patient experience. The Chief Minister told the officials to procure healthcare equipment that is equivalent to the standards of AIIMS, New Delhi. This will help to enhance Radiology Departments in the government medical colleges.

The state government is making significant efforts to improve the facilities in local healthcare facilities to ensure that people get quality medical facilities near their homes. The government is committed to developing an advanced healthcare sector in the state to eliminate the need for patients to travel to other states to get quality treatment.
