Himachal Pradesh and Norway Collaborate on Advanced Waste Management and Sustainable Development

The Government of HP and the Government of Norway continued with a cooperation on research and development of advanced technologies for processing and recycling Construction and Demolition waste (C&D), and sustainable development was a core element. This cooperation will contribute to strengthening the waste management infrastructure in HP, to promoting the principles of a circular economy, of climate-proof urban development, renewable energy, etc., based on Norway's experience and good practice.

Advancing Sustainable Waste Management and Green Development

The idea of this collaboration is to have an advanced C&D Waste recycling technology and create a sustainable solution to resolve the issues faced at the doorsteps of Urban Society, which are specific to the Hill areas. Himachal is seeking Norway's support to set up waste-free and maximise the utilisation of resource places; digitise governance; shift to Renewable Energy and sustainable urban development.

The Chief Minister Sukhu discussed the efforts being made by the Government of the State for the implementation of sustainable development projects such as Green Cover, Natural Farming without making use of chemical pesticides, etc., and requested the use of environment-friendly vehicles for environmental protection and economic growth of the rural areas.

According to Precedence Research, the global waste management market size was calculated at USD 1.28 trillion in 2025 and is predicted to increase from USD 1.37 trillion in 2026 to approximately USD 2.44 trillion by 2035, expanding at a CAGR of 6.66% from 2026 to 2035, due to the implementation of the circular economy and its demand for efficient waste management and recycling technologies.

Industry Impact and Outlook

The collaborative work between HP and Norway is a first step to get involved in waste management and environmentally friendly urban planning programmes on a global level, in a sustainable way. The innovative recycling technologies and sustainability design of the project are believed to help contribute to the success and sustainability of waste management in the mountainous areas.

The models developed for human resources work towards sustainability targets in Norway will be valuable in delivering sustainable waste management solutions that can be scaled up for other ecologically sensitive aspects of the world, which will benefit Himachal.
