LG Electronics Starts Mass Production of 5G Smart Telematics Solution

In August 2026, LG Electronics commenced the mass production of its advanced 5G R16-based smart telematics solution and started deliveries to a prominent European automaker. This is an important milestone, as it represents the first deployment of this technology in a production automobile in Europe. This solution integrates a communications module and up to 12 antennas in a single platform.

It provides excellent connectivity, and the company has minimized its complexity, weight, and cost. This solution has been built on the company’s patented Automotive Telematics Platform (ATP) and has been fine-tuned for more than 10 years to improve its software, enhance efficiency, and strengthen its supply chain. The company intends to position its solution as core communication infrastructure in the age of software-defined vehicles (SDV). It supports over-the-air (OTA) updates, Vehicle-to-everything (V2X), and autonomous-driving data transmission.

Traditional vehicle communication platforms are dependent on various physical components such as a telematics control unit and an externally mounted shark-fin antenna. Companies are providing more and more connectivity features in cars, which has resulted in an increase in the number of antennas installed on each car. These antennas facilitate various types of communications, which include Multi-Frequency Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS), Fifth-generation mobile communications (5G), Wi-Fi, and Vehicle-to-everything (V2X).

They have to install antennas at various locations on the vehicle, as the shark fin can accommodate only a specific number of antennas.
