Nissan has announced the third generation of its e-POWER breakthrough, which combines the technology of electric cars with the comfort of conventional internal combustion engines. Nearly a decade after its international premiere and four years after its European premiere, e-POWER continues to revolutionize hybrid mobility. Unlike a traditional hybrid, e-POWER offers a fully electric driving experience without requiring a plug. The new iteration, first used in the European Qashqai, includes significant revisions in both efficiency and refinement. The new car has a real-world fuel economy of 4.5L/100km and can travel up to 1200km on a single tank of petrol.

The fundamental idea of e-POWER remains revolutionary in that the petrol engine is utilized solely for generating electricity, which subsequently drives the electric motor of the vehicle. There is no mechanical connection between the petrol engine and the wheels. This formula has been further improved in the new e-POWER, which completes a powertrain overhaul and offers an even smoother, quieter, and more efficient experience than ever.

The engineers at Nissan have developed a completely new 5-in-1 modular powertrain system that integrates the electric motor, inverter, generator, reducer, and increaser into a smaller, lighter unit. The performance of this improved system has been upgraded to 151 kW, compared to 11 kW in the previous one. The new arrangement retains the same engine format of the three-cylinder 1.5-liter engine with a turbo, but the engine is an entirely redesigned one. It has been eveloped using the exclusive Nissan STARC combustion technology, which offers an exceptional 42% thermal efficiency as the technology stabilizes in-cylinder combustion.

Executive's Statement

Eiichi Akashi, Chief Technology Officer and Executive Officer, Nissan Motor Corporation

“This new, third-generation e-POWER system redefines Nissan’s hybrid technology, providing smooth and responsive driving in all conditions. We’ve embedded nearly a decade of learning to ensure the system is more efficient, refined, and competitive. The launch with Qashqai is just the beginning—we look forward to delivering this advanced powertrain to customers in North America and Japan in FY26, with other markets to follow.”
