A leading player in the semiconductor industry, NVIDIA, is set to invest a substantial amount of $100 billion in ChatGPT maker OpenAI, utilizing its data center chips to supply the company. This deal marks a paradigm shift between two AI titans in the global market, showcasing how collaborative efforts can lead to unprecedented technological evolution. Their move highlights the increasingly overlapping interests of several tech companies as they strive to develop advanced AI systems and models.
Under this deal, NVIDIA will acquire a financial stake in OpenAI. Along with this, the investment provides OpenAI with the access and capital it needs to acquire advanced chips, which are crucial in maintaining its leadership and dominance in a rapidly evolving Artificial Intelligence landscape. Two distinct but interconnected transactions are expected to occur between these two giants, according to the sources. Once the deal is finalized, Nvidia will begin investing in non-voting shares of OpenAI, allowing OpenAI to utilize the cash to purchase chips engineered by Nvidia.
OpenAI CEO, Mr. Sam Altman said, “Everything starts with compute. Compute infrastructure will be the basis for the economy of the future, and we will utilize what we're building with Nvidia to both create new AI breakthroughs and empower people and businesses with them at scale.”
Nvidia shares reached a new high with a 4.4% increase in a record intraday after the announcement. Oracle has gained about 6%, as the company is working closely with OpenAI, Microsoft, and SoftBank to build a project called Stargate, aiming to develop massive AI data centers globally.
According to this new deal, once the two sides finalize the definitive agreement for OpenAI to acquire Nvidia systems, Nvidia will initially invest $10 billion. Nvidia will initiate delivery of hardware with the first gigawatt of computing power on its upcoming platform at the beginning of 2026. This supports OpenAI in offering some very aspirational targets for compute infrastructure and facilitates Nvidia’s vision to build that infrastructure within the expected timeframe.
In addition to this, other tech giants like Google and Amazon have been working to build their own AI chips independently and provide affordable alternatives to Nvidia-sourced chips, aiming to break Nvidia's monopoly in the semiconductor chip market
