The UK-based renewable energy investor Octopus Energy Generation has announced the launch of a US$250 million fund dedicated solely to catalyzing the transition to clean energy in Africa. It is called the Octopus Energy Power Africa Fund (OEPA), and it is an ambitious project aimed at harnessing the continent's most abundant solar and wind energy potential, thereby meeting the current demand for reliable and green electrical infrastructure. This fund collaborates with local alliance lines and key stakeholders, including regional and national infrastructure firms such as Pembani Remgro Infrastructure Managers, who are crucial in advancing the projects.
The continent must switch its energy sources to avoid relying on fossil fuels and instead utilize renewables, as the growing population is making demands that exceed the available energy sources. The OEPA Fund aims to be a catalyst and connector that mobilizes international capital, implements state-of-the-art technology, and enables African people to access clean and affordable energy. Octopus Energy Generation also believes that this fund represents not only an investment vehicle but also a shift toward a more equitable, green energy system for the world, one that leaves no region behind.
However, the establishment of the OEPA Fund, given that sub-Saharan Africa has not yet been electrified and more than 600 million people have no access to basic electricity, is especially important. The ramifications are also far-reaching, having a bearing on health, education, economic productivity as well as environmental sustainability. The old, fossil-based power systems in most African states are polluting and inadequate to meet the soaring demands in the region. Octopus focuses on renewable energy projects that can scale, be affordable, and community-oriented, addressing a gap that is needed and aiding Africa in leaping into the clean energy future.
Zoisa North-Bond, CEO of Octopus Energy Generation
“Africa is abundant with clean energy potential—enough to build the next-generation renewable powerhouse and a greener, fairer future fueled by sunshine and wind. By partnering with local experts, such as Pembani Remgro Infrastructure Managers, we aim to accelerate that future and create new green pathways.”
Ashleigh Gray, Director of the Octopus Energy Power Africa Fund
“With the Octopus Energy Power Africa Fund, we’re offering a new gateway into a region where demand is soaring. This is an incredible opportunity for forward-thinking investors to support transformative clean energy projects and grow with one of the world’s most exciting markets.”
