Qualcomm, a leading semiconductor company headquartered in the U.S., has launched a center for AI research and development in Vietnam. The entire focus of this center is to make advancements in AI technologies that can be leveraged for smartphones extended reality, personal computers, automotive, and IoT-internet of things devices, as per the statement issued by the company. Vietnam also has strategies to leverage AI, develop the semiconductor sector, and digital transformation, which can be aligned by supporting this research center initiative.

The center will help enhance technology transfer, capacity building, along with ecosystem collaboration. In the meeting held on 10th June 2025, the minister of public security in Vietnam supported Qualcomm's president of global affairs, Alex Rogers, to expand the company’s presence and contribution in the country while highlighting the impact of advanced semiconductors and digital infrastructure.

Vietnam has already become a center of attention for various tech giants, like INTEL, which is based in Ho Chi Minh City and has become one of the largest assembly and testing operations in the globe. The government has made a commitment to provide training for 50,000 semiconductor engineers by 2030.

According to officials, the new AI center established by Qualcomm is becoming the company's third-largest center for AI R&D around the globe, after centers built in India and Ireland previously. Vietnam has a fertile ground for technological innovation due to its increasing economy and digital transformation. Digital services in Vietnam are estimated to account for nearly 12% of Vietnam's GDP by 2023, showcasing its potential to adopt digitalization, which is far stronger than in other Asian countries.

The center will further offer engineering resources, business coaching, and intellectual property protection assistance to startups in Vietnam, creating a foundation for a highly sophisticated tech ecosystem. Establishing such a center for the fourth industrial revolution in Ho Chi Minh City portrays Vietnam's significant step and unbreakable commitment to advancing and applying cutting-edge technologies, including artificial intelligence. In fact, this new AI center has become a key bearer for Vietnam's shift from an electronics assembly hub to an innovation center that will lead the semiconductor industry.
