Smart Coatings Help Buildings Stay Cool and Energy Efficient
Smart Coatings MarketBeat the Heat with Smart Coatings
Nippon Paint has launched the latest smart coating system called Walltron Advance Thermal Comfort Solutions (WATCS) in India. This product is designed to help buildings stay cooler and use less energy, especially in very hot places. It is meant for both homes and commercial buildings, like offices or shops.
In many cities, surfaces such as roofs and walls can become extremely hot because of something called the Urban Heat Island effect. In this effect, concrete, tiles, and asphalt absorb heat from the sun and make the local area much hotter than rural regions. In some urban locations, surface temperatures have been known to go up to around 70°C. WATCS is made to address this problem and make indoor spaces more comfortable.
According to Towards Chem&Materials, the smart coatings market size accounted for USD 7.95 billion in 2025 and is predicted to increase from USD 9.73 billion in 2026 to approximately USD 60.25 billion by 2035, expanding at a CAGR of 22.45% from 2026 to 2035, due to the trend towards modern and advanced construction.
The WATCS system works with three different layers that are applied one on top of the others. The first layer is called Insulprime. This acts as a primer that goes directly on the surface. Moreover, the second layer is called Insulcoat. This layer is designed to block heat from going through the surface. Also, the third and final layer is Insulshield. This is the top coat, and it has a very high Solar Reflectance Index (SRI) of 108.
Also, the company says that this development reflects its commitment to sustainable and environmentally friendly construction. By helping lower temperatures and cut energy use, WATCS supports a more comfortable and energy efficient way of living in cities.
