Cape Town-based STS Tech Group has unveiled a pioneering solution that could redefine the future of electric mobility in South Africa. The company has launched Smart EV, a custom electric vehicle (EV) charging system that can increase charging capacity by up to 300% despite grid instability and frequent power outages. In a country where load-shedding has become a constant challenge, this innovation marks a significant breakthrough in securing reliable and sustainable transportation infrastructure.

Smart EV Charging South Africa

The Smart EV initiative was piloted in a high-impact project for the City of Cape Town. The project therefore tripled the EV charging capacity of the municipality from 1MW to 3MW. This included a complete re-engineering of infrastructure, advanced metering systems, and the deployment of chargers with intelligent monitoring capabilities. These systems are not only efficient but also flexible, automatically avoiding charging during peak grid times and intelligently managing demand to prevent power consumption spikes. Add to this the fact that, according to Michael Leighton, Chief Technical Officer of STS, the chargers can be further optimized by harnessing power produced from on-site solar installations during the day, and we have a smarter and cheaper charging solution.

The timing of the Smart EV launch also holds significant global value. With the rapid growth of electric vehicles worldwide, the availability of robust charging infrastructure has become a significant concern for the widespread adoption of electric vehicles. This combination of efficiency and resilience makes Smart EV a game-changer in the transition to clean mobility in South Africa. Furthermore, by combining local learnings with the integration of renewable energy and global best practice smart systems, Smart EV could set an example not only for South Africa but also for other emerging economies with similar challenges.

Executive’s Statement:

Michael Leighton, Chief Technical Officer of STS Tech Group:

“This specific project involved increasing the City of Cape Town’s supply from 1MW to 3MW, redesigning the infrastructure and metering on-site, with new EV chargers monitored through smart systems. These chargers are designed to prevent charging during peak times and actively manage the load to prevent demand spikes during charging. .co.za/bd/life/motoring/2025-08-31-cape-firm-launches-adaptable-ev-charging-solutions
