Sungrow and UNSW Sydney Introduce an AI-Based Community Energy Project
In September 2026, Sungrow and UNSW Sydney introduced an AI-based community energy project at Gibraltar Bowral in the Southern Highlands. This project shows the ability of solar generation, battery storage, and smart energy optimization to enhance energy resilience, improve the efficiency of using renewable energy, and decrease dependence on the grid.
Power needs can have large fluctuations in various commercial settings such as hotels and events throughout the course of a day. The rise in electricity rates and the requirement for dependable sources of energy have made energy usage optimization crucial. This virtual power plant (VPP) project intends to resolve these issues by bringing together solar energy production, battery storage, and energy usage optimization. This system aims to go beyond just generating and storing energy and also assesses the mechanism of usage, storage, and discharging of power based on availability, demand, electricity rates, and battery condition.
The core of this system contains the ST200CF PowerKeeper battery energy storage system developed by Sungrow, which has been deployed across 4 PK stacks, and the SH110CX hybrid inverter, which has been installed by Aussie Hybrid Solar. These platforms are coordinated by the AI Energy Management System (AI EMS) of UNSW Sydney. The Gibraltar Bowral is a prominent hotel and events venue that needs various forms of energy in different amounts, which makes the reliability of energy supply crucial for guest services and event workflows.

Impact on the Energy and Power Industry
According to Precedence Research, the launch of the AI-based community energy project is expected to modernize the energy and power industry. The energy needs of various sectors are continuously increasing, and so are the grid electricity rates. This forces them to find cheaper alternatives that can cater to their needs reliably and affordably. This project introduces the use of automation technologies to optimize the generation and storage of renewable energy.
Impact on the Solar Power Market
The global solar power market size accounted for USD 286.15 billion in 2025, is anticipated to hit USD 304.32 billion by 2026, and is predicted to reach around USD 522.71 billion by 2035, growing at a CAGR of 6.21% from 2026 to 2035.
According to Precedence Research, the introduction of the AI-based community energy project is expected to propel the solar power market. Solar energy is famous for its affordability, but has some issues regarding reliability. A cloudy day could easily hamper operations if a system is entirely dependent on solar energy. The incorporation of AI systems in solar systems helps optimize the optimization of storage and discharge of electricity. These systems boost reliability while keeping the costs down by taking power from the most affordable source at a particular instant; it could be solar or grid. This will help environments with high and consistent power needs to adopt renewable energy solutions.
Impact on the Digital Transformation Market
The global digital transformation market size accounted for USD 1.49 trillion in 2025 and is predicted to reach around USD 12.53 trillion by 2035, growing at a CAGR of 23.73% from 2026 to 2035.
According to Precedence Research, the launch of the AI-based community energy project is expected to boost the digital transformation market. AI systems need a lot of digital infrastructure on the provider side as well as the endpoint side. They need servers, PCs, IoT systems, and cybersecurity infrastructure. This introduces digital adoption in places where there were just solar panels and the energy infrastructure, but nothing digital.
Expert Opinion
The senior officials at Sungrow said that this system provides significant value as it facilitates synchronization between engineering and commercialization workflows. Experts at JT Solar acknowledged the contribution of Sungrow in terms of technical data and guidance. Sungrow itself assessed the calculations to improve trust in the system and show its capability to cut expenditures.
