UNIGRID Inc., a newly formed battery technology firm based in San Diego, has launched its Na+ 12-volt starter battery line. This is a significant change in one of the most established power segments in the automotive industry. The Na+ Fleet technology is a direct replacement of traditional lead-acid starter, lighting, and ignition (SLI) batteries. They are based on the chemistry of sodium chromium oxide to provide the same voltage and cranking performance, but with a significantly longer lifetime capability.

UNIGRID Battery Technology

The automotive industry worldwide has been heavily dependent on lead-acid batteries due to their low cost and familiarity. Although they are heavy, require a lot of maintenance, and have a comparatively short lifespan. Lithium-ion alternatives offered improvements but introduced new challenges, such as the need for sophisticated battery management systems, recycling challenges, and inconsistent performance in cold climates. UNIGRID claims its Na+ Fleet system can eliminate these root issues by delivering high power levels without the risks of lithium-ion chemistry.

The sodium-chromium-oxide cells in these batteries provide over 5,000 service cycles, according to UNIGRID. This is a number almost 10 times longer than the conventional lead-acid battery life. Such a long cycle life is coupled with very low self-discharge, meaning the batteries can be stored for a long time before needing maintenance charging.

Their consistent performance in extreme temperature conditions endears the Na + Fleet to both automotive and industrial applications as a steady, all-weather solution. Furthermore, the automotive industry is undergoing a multi-decade transition to electrification, and new technologies, such as Na+ Fleet, may reset expectations for low-voltage vehicle power systems.

Executive Statement

Darren H. S. Tan, CEO & Co-Founder, UNIGRID Inc.

“The global 12-volt starter battery market has remained unchanged for decades, yet it powers nearly every form of transportation on the road. With Na⁺ Fleet, we are introducing a solution that finally modernizes this space, without the safety risks, cold-weather performance issues, or high system costs that limit lithium-ion adoption. Our sodium-ion chemistry provides stable, reliable cranking power and an exceptionally long service life, and we believe it will redefine what manufacturers and consumers should expect from a starter battery.”
