Meta has finalized a $27 billion financing agreement with alternative asset manager Blue Owl Capital to support the construction of its largest data center project to date. This move comes as major tech companies intensify their efforts to expand infrastructure capable of supporting advanced artificial intelligence development.

The deal marks Meta’s biggest private capital partnership. Under the agreement, Meta will retain approximately 20% ownership in the Louisiana-based project, while Blue Owl-managed funds will hold the majority stake. Blue Owl is contributing around $7 billion in cash to the joint venture, with Meta receiving a one-time cash payout of roughly $3 billion.
The upcoming facility, known as Hyperion and located in Richland Parish, Louisiana, is expected to deliver over 2 gigawatts of computing power. This capacity will support the training of large-scale AI models like those behind ChatGPT and Google Gemini. Blue Owl Co-CEOs Doug Ostrover and Marc Lipschultz described the project as a bold undertaking that reflects the urgency and scale required for next-generation AI infrastructure.
With companies like Meta, Microsoft, Amazon, Alphabet, and CoreWeave projected to spend around $400 billion on AI infrastructure this year, Hyperion is part of a broader industry push. Meanwhile, OpenAI has recently entered deals totaling over $1 trillion to secure 26 gigawatts of compute power, enough to supply energy to 20 million U.S. homes.
Meta CFO Susan Li called the financing a “bold step forward.” The company has signed leases for the facility with an initial four-year term and an option to extend, and it anticipates the project will create over 500 jobs once operational.
According to Forrester analyst Alvin Nguyen, this approach allows Meta to reduce its financial exposure while still pursuing ambitious infrastructure goals. “It helps them mitigate risks at the expense of equity,” he noted. “They avoid taking on massive debt for assets that could lose value if the AI hype cycle cools down.”
