A globally leading player, Arm Holdings, announced that it is planning to design and launch a new generation mobile chip, which will be primarily supportive of Artificial Intelligence functions and will be called Lumex. It has been optimized especially for artificial intelligence that can be run on mobile devices like smartphones and watches without needing to access the internet every time. This Lumex will be available in four types, ranging from more efficient but less powerful, which is specially developed for smart watches and wearable devices, to another device that requires maximum computing power.
They aim to operate a software that harnesses the energy of large AI models and offers peak performance. This is possible by accessing cloud computing on devices like high-end smartphones.
A senior vice president and general manager at Arm, Chris Bergey said, "AI is becoming pretty fundamental to kind of what's happening, whether it's kind of real-time interactions or some killer use cases like AI translation. And we're just seeing (AI) become kind of this expectation."
The Lumex designs revealed that they are part of the company’s compute subsystem business, which is looking to provide handset makers and chip designers with a ready-made piece of technology that will help them perform speedy operations in new products. Arm is also investing significantly to assess its approach to chip designing and has hired many people to complete this task. Arm is aiming to offer complete designs for data centers and mobile phones as a part of its long-term plan to generate maximum revenue.
The Lumex design is optimized for 3-nanometer nodes that can be used for manufacturing by using a method offered by TSMC. The range of iPhone chips Apple introduced was built with a TSMC 3-nanometer process. The company is hosting an event in China to introduce these products, as Apple and Samsung are leading players in the country, highlighting the company’s strategic plans and marketing expertise.
