The SEALION 8 features BYD's fifth-generation Dual Mode (DM) hybrid system under the bonnet. They combine a turbocharged 1.5-liter petrol engine with one or two electric motors, as used in different models. Its entry-level front-wheel-drive (FWD) model is matched to a 19 kWh battery and produces approximately 205 kW and 315 Nm, while the all-wheel-drive (AWD) model produces approximately the same. This offers a larger 35.6 kWh battery and reaches up to 359 kW and 675 Nm, accelerating to 0-100 km/h in approximately 4.9 seconds, which compares fairly well with premium competitors.

BYD has also developed the SEALION 8 chassis and suspension for hard-road conditions, providing comfortable daily driving and sporty cornering in both the city and the countryside. Such localization highlights BYD's intention to ensure SEALION 8 is not just another imported model, but one that is tailored for local appeal and practical use. Strategically, the introduction of the SEALION 8 coincides with BYD's broader market entry in Australia and its efforts to occupy various categories of the SUV and hybrid/e-vehicle markets.

The SEALION 8 cabin emphasizes space and advanced technology, featuring a 15.6-inch central display, a 10.25-inch digital driver screen, and a 21-speaker premium audio system. Comfort and convenience are enhanced by wireless phone charging, massaging seats in both the front and rear, and up to 1,960 liters of cargo space, ensuring practicality for everyday use. Safety is comprehensive, with nine airbags, a 360-degree camera, and a full suite of driver-assistance systems.

Pricing will be revealed closer to launch, but BYD promises “flagship versatility,” combining electric refinement with long-distance practicality. With local testing complete and orders opening soon, the SEALION 8 is poised to make a strong impact in Australia’s expanding hybrid family SUV segment.
